As a die-hard Marvel fan with over two decades of comics under my belt, I can confidently say that the arrival of Knull in “Venom: The Last Dance” has me both thrilled and skeptical. On one hand, it’s exciting to see such a powerful and iconic villain finally making his way onto the big screen. However, as much as I adore Tom Hardy’s Venom, Knull seems like a massive power upgrade from the street-level baddies our antihero has been battling thus far.
The upcoming film titled “Venom: The Last Dance” plans to present viewers with an unforgettable antagonist. The latest trailer conclusively reveals the debut of the Marvel franchise’s strongest villain to date: Knull, also recognized as the King in Black and the God of Symbiotes. Given that this trilogy centers around Venom, Marvel’s iconic symbiote antihero, it logically follows that they would introduce such a significant character for the conclusion of the series. However, considering the immense significance of Knull, some might argue that he is being underutilized in a “Venom” movie.
Although Tom Hardy’s portrayal of Eddie Brock/Venom might be entertaining, it’s important to note that their combat history primarily involves consuming lower-level villains and clashing with other symbiotes. In contrast, Knull, the god of deep darkness, thrives on conquest and destruction, aiming ultimately to transform all existence into an endless void. His symbiote army, which includes Venom, was specifically created by him for this grand objective.
In simpler terms, Knull is too powerful for a Venom movie in the live-action setting. Given his status as one of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s strongest yet unseen villains, Known as The King in Black, he would be more suitable for the MCU rather than just a Venom film. Here’s how Knull might work within the MCU and if there’s any possibility of him being included.
The MCU has already set up symbiote storylines
In a straightforward manner, it can be said that as the deity of Symbiotes, Knull is closely linked to characters such as Venom, Carnage, and others in this category. Luckily, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has prepared the stage for his possible debut by subtly incorporating symbiote hints, one of which is an intentional tribute to Knull himself.
In the extra scenes after the credits of “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” it’s revealed that Venom is drawn into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) due to a glitch in Doctor Strange’s (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) magic. This is similar to how several Spider-Man characters from different universes have arrived. Luckily for Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and his fellow Spider-Men, Eddie and Venom were staying at a remote motel instead of New York City during this event. However, the unfortunate consequence is that they leave a fragment of the symbiote behind when they go back to their own universe. This means that symbiotes are now part of the MCU, potentially paving the way for Knull to interact with the cinematic world.
In addition, Gorr the God Butcher, played by Christian Bale, serves as the antagonist in “Thor: Love and Thunder.” Unlike in the comics, where Gorr obtains All-Black the Necrosword directly from the incapacitated Knull, the movie introduces a middleman character – the Dark Shadow Lord. This villain finds the All-Black instead of creating it, which allows “Love and Thunder” to subtly hint at a possible connection between Knull and the MCU without explicitly mentioning him. The future of exploring this connection lies in the hands of the creators, but they can certainly develop it further if they choose to follow the trail of breadcrumbs leading to Knull.
The Last Dance could set Knull up as a future MCU Big Bad
As a devoted admirer, I ponder over the possibilities of the Marvel Cinematic Universe introducing Knull as a potential future adversary. However, considering his ongoing battle with Venom in “Venom: The Last Dance,” what are the odds that we’ll see him in the MCU?
The main point is: What role does “The Last Dance” plan for Knull? A clever approach might be to use him judiciously, either having him attack only through his minions or taking control of another character, possibly one of the new symbiotes from the upcoming film. This way, Knull could lurk in the background while still creating an impact, and the last Venom movie could build up his presence gradually for maximum effect and potentially greater benefits later on. However, if this is the case, why would the Symbiote God shift to tormenting the Marvel Cinematic Universe instead of serving as the central antagonist shaping the future of Sony’s Spider-Man world?
The answer, of course, is money. An eventual face-off between Venom and Spider-Man has been in the cards for a while now, and since anyone can see that the MCU is far more successful and better established than the SSU, it would make sense to have said confrontation take place in the former. And since the SSU Venom is a protagonist, having Knull as the larger threat would allow him and Spider-Man to form a no-doubt deliciously uneasy alliance to take on the MCU’s more villainous Venom. Besides, the MCU is getting pretty bloated, and Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom won’t be able to antagonize everyone forever. Having another Big Bad waiting in the wings wouldn’t be the worst move, and they simply don’t get much bigger than Knull.
