5 Potential Team-Ups for the Next Deadpool Movie

5 Potential Team-Ups for the Next Deadpool Movie

As a lifelong comic book enthusiast who has spent countless hours poring over panels and plotlines, I find these proposed crossovers absolutely thrilling! The idea of Hercules, Wade Wilson, and Logan (or should I say, Wolverine?) wreaking havoc in Olympus while battling mythic monsters is a dream come true for any fan of Greek mythology. The Ray Harryhausen-inspired stop-motion sequences would be a sight to behold, transporting us back to the classic days of cinema magic.

Currently, the duo of Deadpool and Wolverine has achieved such unprecedented success at the box office, surpassing numerous milestones and shattering multiple records. Given this momentum, it’s safe to say that another installment featuring these characters is highly likely. So, what’s next for Deadpool and Wolverine?

It’s quite possible that both Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman will appear in “Avengers: Secret Wars,” unless it happens earlier in “Avengers: Doomsday.” Considering their long-standing friendship and frequent collaborations with director Shawn Levy, particularly on “Deadpool” and “Wolverine,” it seems unlikely that they won’t work together again following “Secret Wars.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but feel that the team-up dynamics in Deadpool’s stories are simply brilliant, and I’m eagerly anticipating more Wolverine collaborations in future installments. Introducing fresh characters to the mix would undoubtedly make the franchise even more captivating, especially if it allows the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to delve into some of the wilder comic book locales, concepts, and characters that have long intrigued us fans.

Below are some potential team-ups that could see the Merc with the Mouth let loose in the MCU.

    Deadpool & Wolverine (Again)

5 Potential Team-Ups for the Next Deadpool Movie

One possibility is to revisit the unique relationship between Deadpool and Wolverine once more, as their chemistry makes for a timeless buddy narrative. This duo, with their captivating personalities, can easily carry the storyline. In the spirit of James Cameron’s bold approach when he titled the sequel to Alien (1979) as Aliens (1986), introducing multiple Wolverines could significantly heighten the tension and alter the dynamics between Deadpool and Logan.

As a gamer, I’ve got an idea: instead of overloading on Wolverine variations, it’d be intriguing to delve into a new take on the character – X-23/Laura (Dafne Keen). You might remember her unexpected return in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, although some may argue it wasn’t that surprising given the final trailer gave it away a week before release. Since ‘Logan’ (2017), she’s grown and evolved, clearly finding her place within this tight-knit group of heroes. The end of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ hints at her lasting presence in their makeshift family.

The comic books have made Laura increasingly prominent over the years, and she also goes by Wolverine and has her own version of the classic yellow and blue costume. She’s also a central character in the recent ongoing comic, NYX, by Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly and Francesco Mortarino, alongside her pal Ms. Marvel. Perhaps a spot on Kamala Khan’s (Iman Vellani) budding Young Avengers team is in Laura’s MCU future if there’s a certain synergy at play. But that wouldn’t prevent Laura from also showing up in another Deadpool & Wolverine film, which could serve as an exploration of the father-daughter relationship between Logan and Laura at this stage in their lives, with Deadpool serving as the fun uncle. Set the movie on the dinosaur-inhabited Savage Land, introduce local inhabitants Ka-Zar and Shanna, and pit them against Sauron, a geneticist turned Pterodactyl-man and his dino-human hybrids, the Savage Land mutates. That’s a peak comic book movie right there.

Deadpool & Wolverine… and Gambit, Too!

5 Potential Team-Ups for the Next Deadpool Movie

Channing Tatum’s portrayal of Gambit emerged as one of the standout characters in Deadpool and Wolverine, a fortunate twist for Tatum who had originally planned to embody his favorite character in a standalone movie before Fox was acquired by 20th Century. At the end of Deadpool and Wolverine, during the closing credits, Gambit is shown on a monitor still alive after his battle with Alioth. Marvel Studios later shared the full scene online, where we see Gambit approaching a shimmering circle, possibly hinting at more of Tatum’s character in future appearances.

As a passionate gamer, I’m excited about the possibility of seeing my favorite character, Gambit, back in action! His appearances in X-Men 97 have certainly rekindled interest, and I, as an actor, am more than ready to slip into those iconic boots again. Although a solo film might be a tough sell within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I think placing him at the heart of an adventure alongside Deadpool and Wolverine could be a game-changer.

    Deadpool & Wolverine & Hulk

5 Potential Team-Ups for the Next Deadpool Movie

Deadpool and Wolverine reenacted Todd McFarlane’s famous cover for issue #340 of The Incredible Hulk, hinting at a confrontation between Logan and the Hulk. These two hot-tempered characters from Marvel Comics share a rich history, with Wolverine making his full debut in issue #181 of The Incredible Hulk (1974), following a brief teaser in issue #180. Throughout the years, they’ve fought and worked together on multiple occasions, but their showdown has never made it to the big screen yet.

A potential sequel featuring Deadpool and Wolverine, joined by the Hulk, could offer an engaging perspective on Weapon X – a covert operation run by the government aimed at producing future super-soldiers. In the comics, characters like Wolverine, X-23, and Deadpool were directly engineered under this program, while in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Bruce Banner (portrayed by Mark Ruffalo) transforms into the Hulk after an unsuccessful attempt to replicate the super-soldier serum used to create Captain America. This unique blend of characters could provide a compelling exploration of Weapon X’s impact and consequences.

In the upcoming movie “Captain America: Brave New World,” there’s speculation that Weapon X, an enhanced version of which will play a central role, might finally appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This new super-soldier could team up with four other heroes, leading to a thrilling showdown featuring claws, fists, and katanas against Weapon H, originally Clayton Cortez, a former military mercenary who’s been transformed into a Hulk-like creature with an adamantium skeleton and oversized claws by Weapon X. He’s as fearsome as his name suggests. Moreover, She-Hulk (Tatiana Maslany) might join the cast, adding even more excitement to potential storylines that could shatter gamma-strength barriers when it comes to breaking the fourth wall.

Deadpool & Wolverine: Assault on Olympus

5 Potential Team-Ups for the Next Deadpool Movie

This one may come a little out of left field, but what is Deadpool good for if not taking wild swings? The mid-credits scene of Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) sees Zeus (Russell Crowe) sending his son Hercules (Brett Goldstein) to kill Thor. The God of Thunder and the Champion of Olympus have a storied rivalry and friendship in the comics, but at this point in Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) arc, Hercules feels too small an adversary, and the depiction of Zeus too comedic to make for anything more than a perfunctory Thor installment. Hercules, as far as the Marvel Comics version goes, is driven by pleasure and fame, so it’s easy to imagine that his quest to kill Thor becomes sidetracked as he’s swept up in all that Earth has to offer.

So, let’s say Hercules’ quest for fun finds him in Sister Margaret’s for Wayward Children, the bar from the first two Deadpool films, and there he meets Wade and Logan. They swap stories, and Hercules finds them so entertaining that he takes them back to Olympus to impress the gods. Imagine the kinds of hijinks the self-proclaimed “Marvel Jesus” could get up to with the Pantheon of the Gods, and the battles against mythic Greek monsters he, Wolverine and Hercules might find themselves in? Let’s see a Ray Harryhausen-inspired stop-motion sequence against an army of the dead, and a Clash of the Titans-styled twist on the battle against Medusa. Given how much Greek mythology has seeped into our pop culture, the possibilities to nod to, while refashioning classic myths., are endless. Imagine the trio’s pursuits in Olympus end up putting the gods at odds with each other and creating a scenario for Hercules’s shamed brother, Ares, to attempt to wrest control of Olympus from their father. There’s only one way Hercules and his newfound friends can defeat him. Release the Kraken!

    Deadpool & Spider-Man

5 Potential Team-Ups for the Next Deadpool Movie

Ever since Deadpool’s screen debut, fans have eagerly anticipated a team-up between him and Spider-Man. This desire culminated in the creation of the comic book Spider-Man/Deadpool, which spanned 50 issues from 2016 to 2019. Although they might seem an unusual pair, Peter recognizes Deadpool’s potential for greatness, even if he can be annoying; on the other hand, Deadpool tries to meet Spidey’s expectations, but often falls short just by being himself. However, their friendship deepens throughout the series as they confront various foes together. An added bonus is that they can wash their costumes without worrying about colors bleeding.

It’s quite possible that Deadpool won’t miss an opportunity to appear alongside Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in Avengers: Secret Wars. However, at this stage in his career, Holland’s Peter Parker is still green, sincere, and finding his footing. Given his lack of experience, Deadpool might be a bit too much for him to handle. Therefore, an intriguing idea could be to team up Deadpool with a different version of Spider-Man, one who is more witty and plays the role of the exasperated sidekick. This character should also embody the wisdom that comes with having many years under his belt.

In my view, Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of Spider-Man seems perfectly suited for teaming up with Deadpool. Their banter would make for an exciting spectacle. It isn’t that Garfield’s Spider-Man is pessimistic, but he carries a weightiness and fatigue that could create intriguing dynamics between him and Deadpool, and vice versa. Imagine the scene: Deadpool and Spider-Man are abducted by an alien slave trader named Mojo, and find themselves trapped in the Mojoverse – a realm where slaves star in various forms of entertainment serving as live combat for a planet hooked on amusement. Joining forces with two popular enslaved entertainers, Longshot and Dazzler (perhaps Taylor Swift could actually be involved this time), Spider-Man and Deadpool would navigate through genre tropes to escape back home. If that doesn’t scream movie magic, it certainly comes close enough for a possible Scorsese appearance. (Just joking!)
