Govinda didn’t like the idea of being ‘second lead’ to Akshay Kumar and others, recalls wife Sunita; opens up on his fallout with David Dhawan

As a die-hard fan of the iconic duo Govinda and David Dhawan, it’s heartening to reminisce about their golden era that brought us timeless comedies like “Kyo Kii Main Jhuth Nahin Bolta” and “Bade Miyan Chote Miyan.” However, the news of their fallout has always left a void in my laughter-filled memories.

In the past, the filmmaking duo consisting of Bollywood veteran Govinda and David Dhawan were a successful pair, known for creating films like “Kyo Kii Main Jhuth Nahin Bolta,” “Jodi No.1,” “Bade Miyan Chote Miyan,” and others that entertained audiences. Unfortunately, they stopped collaborating due to disagreements on creative decisions. Recently, Sunita, Govinda’s wife, explained their falling out, mentioning that David Dhawan suggested Govinda take supporting roles in the 90s, which he refused.

Sunita Ahuja, who is in a relationship with Govinda, finally spoke out about her husband’s disagreement with David Dhawan. In an interview with Timeout With Ankit, she revealed that there was once a very affectionate bond between the two men. However, she hypothesized that their friendship encountered some difficulties when David Dhawan proposed that Govinda should accept secondary roles, similar to what Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar have done in the past.

In the interview, she expressed her opinion by saying that heroes ought to recognize when their time has passed, using her husband as an example. She pointed out that his success peaked in the 90s, but if he continues to live in that era, it won’t be sustainable. This might be why director David Dhawan recommended he take on secondary roles like Amitabh Bachchan or Akshay Kumar did. Furthermore, she added that these situations can also arise due to the influence of ‘yes men’ who constantly flatter us and reinforce the idea that ‘You are a hero and should only do leading roles’. However, Sunita believes that it’s important to adapt to current trends instead.

Moving forward, she disclosed that it’s possible that the actor playing Partner wasn’t comfortable with the concept of being a secondary character. She explained that this might be due to the fact that during the 90s, he only starred in solo hits alongside David. Sunita Ajuja further stated, “Perhaps he struggled with the idea of being second to Akshay or anyone else, leading to disagreements about it.” However, she believes that both parties had valid arguments. Govinda’s apprehension was reasonable given that he had never taken on a secondary role before. The last collaboration between Govinda and David Dhawan was in the film Do Knot Disturb, which was released in 2009.
