Michael Keaton Gave Jenna Ortega An A+ Beetlejuice Gift Years After Critic Trashed The Flick, And It Really Showed How Perceptions Changed Over Time

As a gamer who grew up in the ’80s and ’90s, I can attest to the fact that the original Beetlejuice was a game-changer for me. Back then, it was like a breath of fresh, spooky air amidst a sea of generic films. So when I heard about its sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, I was beyond excited!

Approximately four decades ago, “Beetlejuice” made its grand entrance on the big screen. Although it is now widely recognized as a genuine classic and one of the best films from the ’80s, its initial release wasn’t without its bumps in the road. Despite the fact that the Original Ghost with the Most is now regarded as one of Tim Burton’s masterpieces, some critics initially panned it harshly. On a related note, the film’s lead actor, Michael Keaton, presented Jenna Ortega with an exceptional gift that underscores how public opinion on the movie has evolved over time.

Michael Keaton and Tim Burton’s classic horror comedy hit, adored by many, laid the foundation for the new release “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which fans are raving about – some even claiming it surpasses the original. The film’s lead actress, Jenna Ortega, excitedly shared on Instagram a fantastic gift she received from Keaton himself. Interestingly, this gift was a tribute to how their movie was initially criticized by critics. Let’s pause for a moment and admire just how well this movie has stood the test of time.

In the picture shared, you’ll notice that the actress who portrays Lydia Deetz’s daughter in the upcoming “Beetlejuice” sequel is seen casually enjoying a drink. However, what truly steals the show is the crisp white shirt adorned with bold black text that displays an old review of “Beetlejuice”. The star of the post, the “Scream” alum kept her caption succinct and to the point.

Gift from Michael Old Beetlejuice review from 1989

It’s worth noting that the movie “Beetlejuice” was released in 1988, so there might be some confusion about whether Jenna Ortega is mistaking the year or if that review from ’89 is accurate. Regardless, it’s reminiscent of Michael Keaton’s classic acting, isn’t it? The front of Ortega’s shirt showcases a harsh critique from critic “G. Franklin,” marked with a blunt “-1” rating. To make the message even clearer, the back of the shirt reinforces the criticism with, “I give it a -1.” That’s rough feedback indeed. It seems that G. Franklin wasn’t the only one who didn’t appreciate “Beetlejuice.

In the past, hosts Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert from the show “Siskel & Ebert” criticized the movie, labeling it as an unfunny copycat of “Ghostbusters.” However, looking back now, it’s evident that they were wrong. The movie, initially dismissed, has since evolved into a cherished and iconic part of cinema history. While some might view it as a cheesy ’80s film, I certainly don’t!

At last, I can’t contain my excitement as Beetlejuice finally locked down a release date for 2024 on September 6th! While some critics have had their usual naysaying (let’s be real, they’re always around), the general buzz for this long-awaited sequel has been overwhelmingly positive. To top it off, Michael Keaton himself labeled it as “really freaking good” before its debut. The movie is currently sitting pretty with a 77% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes and an impressive 81% on the new Popcorn rating from audiences. Can’t wait to see it!

Michael Keaton’s thoughtful present to Jenna Ortega serves as an excellent illustration of how off-base critics can be when it comes to films that resonate deeply with audiences. Time has been particularly generous to movies like Beetlejuice, which, in my view, is a brilliantly funny and eerie masterpiece from Tim Burton that showcases exceptional visual style. I’d give it a solid 10, or as I like to say, a “freaking” 10.
