As a fan who has witnessed Lady Gaga’s incredible journey from college to global superstardom, I can’t help but feel a mix of admiration and empathy for her experiences. It’s heartbreaking to see how some people tried to discourage her when she was just starting out, especially since we all know that success often comes after countless rejections and setbacks.
For approximately 15 years, Lady Gaga has been widely recognized, amassing numerous awards for her music, and then transitioning successfully into acting. The singer garnered an Academy Award with “A Star Is Born” (2018) and is now slated to appear in the highly anticipated sequel “Joker: Folie à Deux” (2024), alongside Joaquin Phoenix. Her fame is undoubtedly established, yet she recently referred to a Facebook group created by her college friends that might have been inspired by the film “Mean Girls.
The Facebook group, as shared on an Instagram celebrity fan site, was called “Stefani Germanotta, you will never be famous.” The group, which referenced Lady Gaga’s given name, appeared to be “Closed,” meaning Lady Gaga could see that people were talking about her but could not access the content herself. Years later, she addressed the petty (and undoubtedly hurtful) behavior, writing:
Friends I studied with from college created something remarkable a while ago. It’s a testament that, despite others doubting or discouraging you, you should persist and continue striving for success.
It’s always disappointing when we see people trying to discourage others from following their dreams, particularly when women feel pitted against each other. Whether the creation of this Facebook group crushed Lady Gaga (I imagine I would have been devastated) or fueled her to work harder, she is certainly enjoying the last laugh.
It’s quite intriguing to ponder if perhaps those words about perseverance were on the actress’ mind as she consistently repeated them during interviews for the A Star Is Born promotional tour, stating that “Even when 99 people in a room doubt you…” She was speaking of her co-star Bradley Cooper and his backing, yet it seems evident that her classmates’ unkind behavior has left an indelible mark on her, even after amassing numerous accomplishments over the years.

It’s amusing that a group of just 12 people on Facebook failed to acknowledge their fellow member’s stardom, which means that each one could have claimed one of Lady Gaga’s Grammy Awards, and she would still possess one additional award.
In the bigger picture, twelve individuals might not appear substantial; however, when discussing classmates or acquaintances from real life at the age of 20, it’s quite a considerable group. It’s my hope that Lady Gaga’s demonstration of having faced genuine ‘Mean Girls’ challenges will encourage other emerging artists to persevere through negativity and carry on developing their skills.
