Emmys Snubs & Surprises: ‘Only Murders in the Building’ Shut Out of Major Categories as ‘Hacks,’ Lamorne Morris Surprise

As a devoted fan who has followed the twists and turns of the small screen for decades, I must admit, this year’s Emmys left me scratching my head more often than not! The star-studded lineup of Only Murders in the Building, with its impressive 21 nominations, was a strong contender. Yet, it walked away empty-handed during the main event, despite securing three awards at the Creative Arts Emmys.

The popular Hulu series “Only Murders in the Building” entered this year’s 2024 Emmys with a impressive 21 nominations, placing it third among all shows. Star Selena Gomez received her first acting nomination for her role on the show, while Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd were nominated for their roles in season three. Moreover, the series grabbed an early spotlight during Sunday night’s broadcast when Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short presented the first award of the evening following an introduction by hosts Dan Levy and Eugene Levy, who also appear in the fourth season of “Only Murders in the Building.

Although my fellow nominees in the top tier (Shogun and The Bear) bagged several awards at the ceremony last night, unfortunately, I walked away empty-handed during the ABC broadcast. Despite our stellar cast and comical twist on murder mysteries, it seems the voters preferred other titles this time around.

It’s important to note that Only Murders did secure three awards at the Creative Arts Emmys last week. Among these were accolades that helped composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul achieve EGOT status. However, it didn’t win an award during the main ceremony.

Shows that didn’t take home any awards during the ABC telecast despite receiving several nominations include Saturday Night Live, which lost to Last Week Tonight With John Oliver in the scripted variety series category following an SNL reunion sketch poking fun at creator Lorne Michaels losing at the Emmys (the show won six awards at the Creative Arts Emmys). Other shows with numerous nominations but no wins include 16-time nominated Fallout and Mr. and Mrs. Smith, each winning twice at the Creative Arts Emmys; 11-time nominee Palm Royale, which also received one Creative Arts win, as well as Baby Reindeer; and 10-time nominees Feud: Capote vs. The Swans and Lessons in Chemistry, both winning once each at the Creative Arts Emmys.

Even though ‘The Crown’ was nominated 18 times and previously had won the best drama series, some predicted it might win again in the top category this year, it ended up winning just a single award during the main broadcast – for best supporting actress, given to Elizabeth Debicki for her portrayal of Princess Diana. Similarly, ‘The Morning Show’, nominated 16 times this year, also took home only one award in the ABC telecast, which was for supporting actor Billy Crudup.

In the realm of unexpected victories, “Hacks” surprised critics who had predicted a clean sweep for “Bear,” especially following the FX show’s record-breaking 21 wins in a single comedy season. Interestingly, “Hacks” had already claimed two awards that evening, with its lead actress, Jean Smart, outperforming Ayo Edebiri from “The Bear” and last year’s best comedy actress winner Quinta Brunson, who were both considered formidable contenders for the top spot. Remarkably, Quinta Brunson’s series, “Abbott Elementary,” failed to secure any awards during this year’s Emmys broadcast, even though it had nine nominations and a history of past victories. This was its first appearance on ABC since the show’s initial release.

As a devoted fan, I couldn’t believe my eyes when The Bear snatched the victory in the Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category at this year’s Emmys! Liza Colón-Zayas outshone the predicted winner, Hannah Einbinder from Hacks. Despite the fact that the Emmys are celebrating the second season of The Bear, its third season has just wrapped up on Hulu, featuring a remarkable episode centered around Colón-Zayas’ character.

In an unexpected turn of events, it was Lamorne Morris from “Fargo” who triumphed in the best supporting actor in a limited series category, overthrowing the predictions of Emmys pundits that favored Jonathan Bailey from “Fellow Travelers”.

In its third and last season, Reservation Dogs failed to secure any wins despite garnering more nominations than before. Some experts predicted that this critically-acclaimed show focusing on Indigenous teenagers might finally receive the recognition it was due with a couple of Emmy awards.
