As a gamer who never quite grasped the intricacies of the periodic table, I must say Sokobond Express has been a delightful surprise. This game manages to turn the drudgery of school chemistry into an engaging puzzle experience that even I can appreciate!
During my school years, particularly in science classes, I didn’t find the material engaging or something I was eager to learn. In other words, it didn’t hold my interest back then.
If alternative methods for understanding the composition and function of various components had been presented, perhaps my attention might have been piqued. Meet Sokobond Express, a game that delves slightly into the world of chemical elements.
Sokobond Express gameplay
I say slightly because if you are like me and have no idea, you can just play this as a puzzle game. Each level is made of a grid, with a starting and ending point. You need to move the base element around the map, grabbing other elements on the correct side to create something.
This process involves laying out a path, causing any connected components to advance. Once a grid square has been utilized, retracing steps or similar actions are not allowed. Initially, merging hydrogen with oxygen to produce water is quite straightforward. Upon finishing each element and concluding the level, you’ll receive some interesting facts about your creation.
Worry not, there are hints to help you out!
Each level does have a hint, which doesn’t show you the exact path you need to take, but what the element should look like when it hits the endpoint. This can be quite helpful, especially as some elements hang on by two lines while others hang on by one, so you can sort of see where specific elements need to be attached. Sometimes the hint also gives a small segment of where the path should go. It’s still quite challenging to get the elements to the end though!
In simpler terms, if an object is connected to your primary object within the game map, it cannot collide with any other objects. However, feel free to move outside the grid, but be aware that physically touching another object will cause your progress to end. You can easily identify such instances by observing the ‘X’ on the line, which marks where you’ve come into contact with an obstacle.

I believe that the straightforward and clearly marked features, such as those found in Sokobond Express, make it an enjoyable puzzle – you can quickly spot your errors without even needing to start the level, giving you a clear understanding of how things might unfold.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed there are usually at least two options in the level select menu, which is great when you’re stuck because you can always switch to a different one. Some levels have a question mark or dotted line, indicating they will unlock new areas and introduce fresh mechanics. In my journey, I soon discovered that collecting the connection orb was essential; it allowed me to acquire another element, making the game even more challenging.
