Karan Johar reveals people questioned his decision to be a single parent with 'samaaj kya kahega': ‘Why should I...’

As a lifestyle expert with years of personal and professional growth under my belt, I find immense respect and admiration for Karan Johar. His decision to embrace parenthood as a single parent, despite facing societal scrutiny, showcases his unwavering commitment to living authentically and pursuing what he desires without apology.

Karan Johar recently disclosed that his decision to raise his children, Yash and Roohi, on his own has been difficult. He’s encountered skepticism from some who questioned his choice and said “What will they say, what will society think”. However, Karan chose not to worry about the criticism and instead stated, “Why should I care about people’s opinions when I have my mother’s approval?

During an episode on the Jai Madaan—Lady of Fortune program, filmmaker Karan Johar openly discussed the apprehensions people raised about his choice to be a single parent. Many questioned, “Are you really doing this? What will others think, what will society say?” However, Karan was unfazed by these worries as he had the backing of his mother.

I proudly declared, ‘Why let others’ opinions weigh me down when I have my mother’s approval?’ My mother, ever encouraging, promptly responded, ‘Pursue your dream of having a child on your own without a partner; just remember, it’s a significant responsibility.’ Indeed, watching a child blossom and shape their unique identity is an immense commitment.

As a devoted admirer, I’d express it this way: The director openly confided in us his personal goal – to lead a life free from remorse or self-reproach. He underscored his determination to chase his dreams fearlessly and live honestly, without reservation. Despite being advised extensively, even cautioned about potential oversharing through platforms like Koffee with Karan, he opted to brush aside such apprehensions. Many suggested that directors should uphold an air of enigma, operating primarily behind the camera. However, Karan boldly contested and shattered these traditional perceptions.

Previously, during an interaction with Faye D’Souza, filmmaker Karan Johar spoke about the complexities he encounters, particularly when it comes to questions regarding his own mother. He admitted that such instances can be tough, and he finds parenting in general to be a challenging endeavor. He pointed out that today’s family structures are often unconventional, as his child must navigate questions about their ancestry and the role of the woman who is actually his mother. Karan shared that he seeks advice from school counselors on how best to manage these unique situations, emphasizing that parenthood is never a simple task.

2017 marked the day I became a proud parent of my precious twins, Yash and Roohi, who were brought into this world through the miracle of surrogacy on February 7th. The name Yash was chosen in honor of my dearly departed father, Yash Johar, while Roohi’s name holds a special connection to my wife, Hiroo Johar.
