Ajay Devgn's Maidaan director Amit Sharma breaks silence on film’s box office failure; reveals being flooded with messages post OTT release

As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for movies and a deep appreciation for well-crafted biographical dramas, I must admit that Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan left me both captivated and puzzled. The film, directed by the talented Amit Ravindernath Sharma, is a testament to the power of storytelling and the art of cinema, yet it seems to have fallen short in terms of box office success.

The biographical drama film “Maidaan,” directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma and starring Ajay Devgn as footballer Syed Abdul Rahim, received praise from critics but had a relatively low turnout at the box office. Now, director Amit Sharma has expressed his bewilderment regarding the film’s underperformance, saying, “I couldn’t pinpoint why the expected large numbers didn’t materialize.” He went on to say, “After its release on streaming platforms, I received numerous messages and emails.

In a chat with DNA, director Amit Sharma spoke about the response to his movie starring Ajay Devgn. He mentioned that while several people didn’t catch it in the cinema, those who did all had positive things to say. “When the film hit the screens, many chose not to see it. However, everyone who did watch it seemed to really enjoy it and appreciate its merits. I went around checking out the audience’s reactions during screenings, and their responses were truly inspiring,” he shared.

Additionally, the director shared that he’d received numerous messages following the movie’s online release. He mentioned that a lot of viewers lamented missing out on watching it at the cinema, yet emphasized that each person has the freedom to decide where they prefer to enjoy movies.

As a lifestyle expert, I find myself in a bit of a conundrum when it comes to the recent blockbuster movie I produced, which had an impressive budget of over 200 crores. Despite garnering favorable reviews and a positive public response, the film only managed to earn 68 crores at the box office. I’ve been left scratching my head, trying to figure out why our financial returns didn’t meet expectations given the warm reception from the audience. In all honesty, I can’t quite put my finger on what might have contributed to this financial shortfall.

Regardless of the movie’s box office results, Amit Sharma feels pleased with the final product he created. He is satisfied with how the film turned out and appreciates the positive feedback it received from European viewers, who considered it on par with Hollywood productions. He stated, “The praise I received from European audiences, comparing it to Hollywood films, was a significant validation. They all said that they had never seen football depicted so authentically in any movie, even those made in the West.

Maidaan features Ajay Devgn as Syed Abdul Rahim, a crucial character in Indian football history. Also starring are Priyamani, Gajraj Rao, and Rudranil Ghosh in notable roles. The film is helmed by director Amit Ravindernath Sharma, who has previously worked on Badhaai Ho, and produced by Zee Studios, Boney Kapoor, Arunava Joy Sengupta, and Akash Chawla.

As a lifestyle aficionado, I’m thrilled to share that the highly anticipated movie, Maidaan, made its grand debut in cinemas on April 10, 2024, coinciding beautifully with Eid festivities. This remarkable production is now ready for you to enjoy from the comfort of your home on Amazon Prime Video.
