As a long-time subscriber to Netflix, I’ve seen more than my fair share of heartbreak when it comes to beloved shows getting canceled prematurely. It seems like every time I log in, there’s another hashtag trending on social media about yet another series that didn’t get the chance to reach its full potential.
As a passionate TV viewer, I’ve often found myself mourning the premature end of a series that had immense potential, but was unfortunately cut short. It’s disheartening when a show needs more than just one season to truly find its rhythm, yet the competitive nature of television sometimes doesn’t grant a series the necessary time to grow an audience. Unfortunately, Netflix, which once prided itself on giving shows the chance to find their audience, has been known to cancel series prematurely. The list of these canceled Netflix series has grown so large that it’s sparked a viral hashtag on social media, as fans reminisce and pay tribute to some of the platform’s former television gems.
As a dedicated cinephile, I can tell you that if you check out the latest buzz on social media, you’ll find the hashtag #NetflixCancels is trending, as fans passionately debate a multitude of series abruptly terminated on the platform. This conversation seems to have been ignited by a 2017 tweet from Netflix’s then-official Twitter handle, which read, “We don’t like leaving a story unfinished. We learned a lot from Sense and we’re going to try not to do this in the future.” This statement refers to the science-fiction series ‘Sense8’, which was abruptly cancelled after just two seasons and 24 episodes, ending on a significant cliffhanger despite the creators believing they were getting a third season. However, Netflix eventually produced a two-and-a-half-hour series finale to provide a proper conclusion for ‘Sense8’. Regrettably, this did little to halt the pattern of Netflix prematurely concluding shows.
X Users Are Pointing to Several Netflix Series That Were Canceled Prematurely
Users employing the hashtag #NetflixCancels are pointing out numerous series on Netflix that were either terminated prematurely or without a satisfying conclusion. For instance, @Katring_07 shared a collection of shows that Netflix discontinued early, such as the recently canceled Dead Boy Detectives and others like The OA, 1899, Mindhunter, Santa Clarita Diet, The Society, and more. In response to a 2017 Netflix statement that read, “We don’t like leaving a story unfinished,” @Katring_07 commented, “It seems many shows have different opinions on this matter,” accompanied by the hashtag #NetflixCancels.
Some posts are tailored towards specific genres or series, as demonstrated by user @Edge_of_Dawn776 who expressed their frustration over Netflix’s handling of fantasy shows. The caption reads: “‘Netflix should improve its approach to fantasy or simply avoid it altogether. This is ludicrous. Fans deserve better.'” Accompanying this statement are pictures of various fantasy series that were previously aired on the platform.
The crime thriller series Mindhunter, which was canceled after only two seasons, is another show being represented with #NetflixCancels. X user @Charliebadger99 points to the series having more stories to tell by stating, “There was decades of material for Mindhunter to work with. It could have been the greatest show of all with a timeline continuing to show the most notorious serial killers and the advancement of the behavioral unit. It was ridiculous to leave it where it did.” Another user, @VeryLiza, also shades Netflix for canceling Mindhunter and bringing on “garbage reality” such as Love is Blind and Too Hot to Handle.
In response to the ongoing conversation about cancellations on Netflix, it’s worth mentioning that Netflix co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters have stirred controversy by stating that the streaming service has never canceled a show with strong viewership. Sarandos clarified that while many of these shows were well-intentioned, they catered to a small audience on a large budget. He suggested that being able to reach both small and large audiences, regardless of the budget, is crucial. However, given Netflix’s significant investments in some less-than-exceptional content and the vocal fan bases of shows that have been axed, it seems plausible that Netflix may have canceled popular shows for reasons unknown to the public.
