The Perfect Couple star Ishaan Khatter says he has been typecast for looking 'very young'; reveals 'complex' roles are not written for him

As an ardent admirer of Ishaan Khatter, I find his journey in the world of cinema truly captivating. His ability to tackle complex roles at such a young age and his unwavering determination to break free from stereotypes is nothing short of inspiring.

Recently, Ishaan Khatter has been grabbing attention due to his Hollywood debut in The Perfect Couple. Although he’s enjoyed playing diverse roles throughout his six-year acting career, he recently shared with The Indian Express that he feels limited by being consistently offered roles because of his youthful appearance. When asked if this is a source of frustration for him, the 28-year-old addressed the issue.

Khatter made his acting debut at the age of 21, and he’s shared that throughout his career, the most frequent response he received was, “You look incredibly young.” Unfortunately, in the Indian film industry, there aren’t many complex roles written for young actors. However, Khatter feels fortunate to have begun his journey in projects directed by acclaimed directors like Maji Majidi (of Beyond The Clouds) and Mira Nair (A Suitable Boy).

When inquired if it creates bitterness within him, Ishaan replied that it only does so if he’s seeking the same opportunities. Given his past experiences, such as landing roles like Beyond The Clouds, he aspired to step out of the norm and break free from expectations. “I simply wanted to add some complexity to my characters,” Ishaan explained. “Even in mainstream productions, I aim for roles with depth, but it’s crucial that the script provides the necessary layers and dimensions, as an actor’s job is to bring those elements to life.

In the same conversation, Ishaan Khatter expressed that he doesn’t aim to establish himself only within a single industry. He considers himself more as someone who has been fortunate rather than overly strategic about getting opportunities, and these roles have enriched his filmography. He stated, “I’ve always aimed for my work to be varied, I never felt the need to make a name in any specific industry.” Furthermore, when people ask him if he wishes to work more in the Western world, he replies casually, “Wherever good work is found.

In the newly launched “The Perfect Couple,” Ishaan took on the role of Shooter Dival, who was Billy Howle’s friend in the series. This Netflix production, spanning six episodes, is based on a novel by Elin Hilderbrand and is helmed by director Susanne Bier. Jenna Lamia serves as the showrunner, with the writing credits going to her as well.
