You Can Now Get Your Hands on Yrjö Kukkapuro’s Iconic "Experiment Chair"

As a dedicated follower of modern design and furniture history, I can wholeheartedly say that the return of Yrjö Kukkapuro’s Experiment Chair is nothing short of a dream come true. This iconic piece, with its bold and expressive design, has always been a symbol of postmodernist aesthetics for me. The fact that it was out of production for 11 years made it all the more precious and sought-after.

In 1984, Yrjö Kukkapuro introduced his iconic Experiment Chair to the world, which soon became a defining piece in his professional portfolio. Surprisingly, even with its worldwide acclaim, manufacturing of the chair was halted only eleven years after its debut.

As a passionate admirer of Postmodernist design, I am thrilled to witness its resurgence! The credit for this comeback goes to Hem, the innovative Swedish brand that has skillfully reintroduced it to the market. Through a collaborative effort with Yrjö Kukkapuro and Studio Kukkapuro, Hem meticulously worked alongside both the designer himself and his daughter, Isa Kukkapuro-Enbom, to ensure the reissued chair remains true to its original essence.

In order to meet the requirements set by the year 2024 while also emphasizing comfort, some modifications concerning the environment and ergonomics were implemented; however, its daring and expressive nature remains similar to what it was 40 years ago.

Kukkapuro stated, “I designed the ‘Experiment’ collection for the Milan fair of 1982, which I consider my most significant career achievement. I’m thrilled that Hem is bringing back this design as it gains new life. Upon learning about this opportunity, I felt a sense of nostalgia and joy at the thought of returning to Sweden. However, I now realize that ‘Experiment’ will not only be in Sweden again; it will be globally available once more.

The standout aspect of this redesign is its stylish armrests, originally conceptualized by Kukkapuro to offer a striking contrast against the otherwise minimalistic design. For the remake, these armrests can be selected in three colors: red (representing fire), green (symbolizing trees), blue (indicating water waves), and additionally, black. As with the initial model, these colors signify specific elements.

In my gaming world, I’m always on the lookout for gear that stands out, just like the Experiment Chair. This beauty boasts a chrome-plated tubular frame, giving it a futuristic vibe, with an upholstered backrest and seat for comfort. As Petrus Palmér, founder of Hem, puts it, Yrjö, the designer, is always ahead of his time, leading the way in furniture design with his unique style and clever builds that still feel fresh today. We’re stoked to bring this iconic chair back into the gaming landscape!

At this year’s 3daysofdesign festival held in the vibrant city of Copenhagen, I got a sneak peek at the captivating Experiment Chair. Mark your calendars, as it will be up for grabs on Hem’s website starting October 16th! The price tag? A modest $1,899 USD to bring this stunning piece of design into your gaming den.
