Distraught Saoirse Ronan Chases a Missing Child in Steve McQueen’s ‘Blitz’ Trailer

As a seasoned gamer who has navigated countless virtual worlds and lived through countless digital wars, I can confidently say that Steve McQueen’s “Blitz” trailer has piqued my interest like no other historical drama has in recent memory. The gritty realism of wartime London, the emotional turmoil of a mother searching for her son, and the unwavering spirit of a 9-year-old boy determined to find his way home – these elements are not just pixels on my screen anymore; they’re a tangible narrative that promises an immersive experience.

In the trailer released on Thursday, Saoirse Ronan portrays a frantic mother on a quest to find her lost son amidst World War II-stricken East London, as depicted in Steve McQueen’s movie titled Blitz.

In the heat of World War II, I, a 9-year-old lad named George, found myself in a challenging situation. Elliot Heffernan portrays me on screen, and my mother Rita, skillfully played by Saoirse Ronan, made the tough decision to send me away as an evacuee to the tranquil English countryside. However, being a headstrong youngster, I was determined to retrace my steps back home to East London, where my beloved mother and grandfather Gerald (Paul Weller) reside.

Rita implores the London police officers, asking them where her son is at one point during the trailer,” and “At another moment in the clip, George can be seen rushing for cover with other London residents, seeking refuge in subway stations or damaged buildings as German air raids persistently attack the eastern part of London.

The Apple original movie unfolds amidst the destructive German “Blitzkrieg” air raids on London, with McQueen as its writer and director.

As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: “When my latest creation, ‘Blitz,’ was premiered at the London Film Festival, I shared that this movie is all about us, Londoners. It pays tribute to our resilience during the Blitz and delves into the authentic portrayal of people in our city. At its heart, it tells a story of a working-class family yearning to be together amidst war times.

McQueen and his spouse, filmmaker Bianca Stigter from the Netherlands, have recently teamed up to create “Occupied City,” a thought-provoking documentary examining Amsterdam during World War II under Nazi control.

The cast of the movie “Blitz” features a number of talented actors and actresses: Paul Weller (a renowned musician), Harris Dickinson, Benjamin Clementine, Kathy Burke, Stephen Graham, Leigh Gill, Mica Ricketts, CJ Beckford, Alex Jennings, Joshua McGuire, Hayley Squires, Erin Kellyman, and Sally Messham. This talented ensemble marks Paul Weller’s first acting appearance.

In collaboration with Working Title Films and New Regency, McQueen’s team worked on the production of this film titled “Lammas Park”. The producers are credited to Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, McQueen himself, Anita Overland, Adam Somner, Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan, and Michael Schaefer. Anna Smith Tenser, Natalie Lehmann, Sheeraz Shah, and Sarah-Jane Wright are listed as executive producers for the project.

Blitz brings McQueen together with production designer Adam Stockhausen from the set of 12 Years a Slave to create the visuals of war-torn London, while other creative partners include composer Hans Zimmer, costume designer Jacqueline Durran, cinematographer Yorick Le Saux and makeup artist Naomi Donne.

The movie, slated for its global debut at the London Film Festival, is scheduled to open in cinemas on November 1st. Starting from November 22nd, it will also be available for streaming on Apple TV+.
