‘Magic: The Gathering’ Animated Series Restarts at Netflix

As a longtime fan of both Magic: The Gathering and Terry Matalas’ impressive television work, I can hardly contain my excitement for this upcoming animated series! Matalas’ knack for crafting compelling narratives, as evidenced by his work on shows like Star Trek: Picard, Nikita, MacGyver, and 12 Monkeys, makes him the perfect choice to helm this project.

The cards are back on the table.

Netflix is giving another attempt at an animated series inspired by the widely played tabletop game, Magic: The Gathering. Back in 2019, Netflix acquired a series built around this game, with Joe and Anthony Russo serving as executive producers.

After encountering creative disagreements, the Russo brothers left the project and Jeff Klein (from ‘Transformers: Prime’) stepped in as the director. Initially, Brandon Routh was slated to play a major voice role, but that specific production of the show didn’t come to fruition. In an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival, Routh mentioned that the show seems to be “not happening” in relation to his involvement; however, it’s important to note that Netflix is now moving forward with a different version of the show.

The upcoming television series, slated to begin filming shortly, will be spearheaded by showrunner Terry Matalas (known for his work on “Star Trek: Picard” and Disney+’s forthcoming “Vision”). Similar to its predecessors, this show originates from Hasbro Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast, the entities responsible for creating and disseminating the game upon which it is based.

At present, there’s not much information available regarding Magic: The Gathering. Initially, the Russo and Klein versions of the series aimed to explore the characters of the game’s Planeswalkers, while also creating fresh characters.

Apart from Picard, which gained him a nomination for the Writers Guild of America Award this year, Matalas has also worked as a writer and producer on various shows. These include The CW’s Nikita, CBS’s 2010s reboot of MacGyver, and Syfy’s 12 Monkeys. He is represented by Creative Artists Agency (CAA) and Anonymous Content.
