Section 36 director recalls telling Vikrant Massey; 'If you are Prem, then there's nothing like it'

As a seasoned movie enthusiast who’s seen more than a few reels of celluloid magic, I can confidently say that Vikrant Massey is a rising star whose talent shines brighter with each role he takes on. His journey from supporting artist to leading man, and now to portraying complex characters like Prem Singh in Section 36, is nothing short of inspiring.

Actor Vikrant Massey, previously known for his supporting roles in films such as Dil Dhadakne Do, Lootera, and Half Girlfriend, secured his first leading part in Konkona Sen Sharma’s 2017 film, A Death in the Gunj. In Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 2023 production, 12th Fail, Vikrant Massey had a significant breakthrough. Most recently, he portrayed the character of a serial killer, Prem Singh, in Netflix’s series Section 36 this month. Director Aditya Nimbalkar of Section 36 reminisced about telling Vikrant Massey that, if he embodied Prem, it was truly extraordinary.

During an interview with India Today, director Aditya Nimbalkar stated without hesitation that he believed Vikrant Massey was capable of portraying a negative character in Section 36. Looking back at the moment when the new filmmaker first read the script, Aditya said he was thoroughly impressed and agreed to make the film only if Vikrant took on the role of Prem.

Aditya expressed confidence in Vikrant’s acting talent, noting his ability to bring fresh ideas to roles he hadn’t tackled before. He also mentioned the excitement of casting actors who can offer something unique instead of those who are often stereotyped for similar characters. The director agreed, stating they both embraced this challenge and it proved successful.

Discussing his involvement in a project Maddock Films and Vikrant were discussing, Aditya mentioned that Vikrant had read the script before him. The director further revealed that the actor from “12th Fail” was keen on portraying the character of Prem. It was discovered that both Vikrant and the production house were searching for a director, and Aditya’s agency proposed his name to them.

In Section 36, the director mentioned having known Vikrant socially for a long time due to mutual acquaintances. He further disclosed that upon seeing Aditya’s name on the list, Vikrant showed immediate excitement or recognition.

In Section 36- A Story Based on Real Events made its debut on Netflix on September 13. This series also featured Deepak Dobariyal as a significant character. He was given the role of Ram Charan Pandey, a police officer in this production. The plot revolves around an imaginary story set in Section 36, a slum area where several children have vanished. Throughout the investigation, the police officer confronts a serial killer.
