Ridley Scott Planning a ‘Gladiator 3’: “There’s Already An Idea”

As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of ancient Rome, the prospect of Ridley Scott returning to the Colosseum for yet another installment of “Gladiator” is nothing short of exhilarating. The man is a cinematic gladiator himself, consistently delivering masterpieces that transport us back in time and leave us on the edge of our seats.

Twenty years after his return to the Roman Colosseum with Gladiator II, Ridley Scott is now mapping out plans for a third visit to ancient Rome.

Scott expressed his preference for moving forward with “Gladiator III” instead of another potential project, as he shared with The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday. He mentioned that an idea for this sequel already exists. Furthermore, he’s drawing inspiration from “The Godfather Part II” to shape the narrative for the new story.

News about Gladiator 3 began to emerge on Friday, following remarks from Scott that were also reported by the French magazine Premiere.

The sequel to “Gladiator,” titled Gladiator II, is set to release on November 22nd. This long-awaited follow-up comes 20 years after Ridley Scott’s original “Gladiator,” a film that garnered five Oscars, including the awards for Best Picture and Best Actor (won by Russell Crowe). The ensemble cast of the new movie includes Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn, and Connie Nielsen.

Scott continues to be one of the busiest directors active in Hollywood, often releasing two movies in a given year. His upcoming project is a Bee Gees biography at Paramount, which will see the pen of John Logan, also known for writing ‘Gladiator’, as well as Joe Penhall. He plans to start filming next year, split between London and Miami.

Interestingly, filmmaker Roland Emmerich has revealed that the second season of his television show, “Those About to Die“, will draw inspiration from “The Godfather II”. Despite this, Ridley Scott, who is working on “Gladiator 3”, appears to be more focused on employing flashbacks, while Emmerich is drawn towards delving into themes similar to those in the original film. Both Emmerich’s TV series and the initial “Gladiator” movie were based on Daniel P. Mannix’s novel “Those About to Die“.

Regarding “Gladiator II,” Scott expresses a high level of confidence, stating that it might even surpass the original in terms of wonder and amazement. He made this comment during Cinemacon in April when he presented the initial footage.
