As a seasoned movie-goer and Marvel aficionado who’s seen more than a few superhero dustings come and go, I can’t help but feel a sense of deja vu when it comes to Scarlet Witch’s latest “final” goodbye.
The showrunner responsible for “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” has spoken out about the depiction of Elizabeth Olsen’s character. While some fans were dissatisfied with the alterations to Scarlet Witch during her supposed last hurrah in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Schaeffer suggests that it can be challenging to develop a deep emotional bond with characters borrowed from the MCU, since they are only temporary assets while a writer is working with them.
Schaeffer played a crucial role in the massive success of Disney+’s Marvel Studios series, particularly “WandaVision.” However, the way Wanda’s story progressed in the Doctor Strange sequel sparked significant disagreement among fans. Now, Schaeffer is leading the production of “Agatha All Along,” a series that seems to be a spiritual successor to “WandaVision.” In the premiere of this new series, there were suggestions that Wanda’s death in “Multiverse of Madness” may indeed be permanent. Yet, Schaeffer expressed her hope for Elizabeth Olsen to reprise her role in future projects. Speaking to Radio Times, she stated:
I have a deep affection for Wanda, as well as every character I’ve been fortunate enough to collaborate with, such as Natasha in Black Widow and Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel, among others. However, being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe means that I temporarily share these characters and their narratives.
Working with them was a unique and magical experience in the MCU, as I had many friends and coworkers on that movie. I’m thankful for my time spent with Wanda, and I hope to see more of her character in future projects. Truthfully, I’d be thrilled to see more of Lizzie Olsen too, she’s truly exceptional.
The Status of Scarlet Witch is Still Far from Certain
As a die-hard movie fan, I’ve got to say, it seems like Marvel Studios has been dropping hints left and right about Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch meeting her demise in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” From Kevin Feige’s initial remarks when the film was released, to a recent entry in the new Marvel timeline book, and now with the opening episode of “Agatha All Along,” it’s been hard not to notice. However, despite these strong indications, none of these instances definitively close Scarlet Witch’s story, and given the unpredictable nature of the multiverse, her tale could be rewritten in a heartbeat!
2022’s Sam Raimi movie depicted Wanda apparently destroying the Darkhold carvings and seemingly perishing, but this destruction wasn’t definitive proof of her demise. A sudden burst of power in the crumbling ruins of Wundagore Mountain led some to speculate that Wanda might have managed a last-minute escape from her supposed fate, rather than losing her powers permanently.
As a movie enthusiast, I must admit that the heart-wrenching farewell of Scarlet Witch in the book, “Marvel Studios The Marvel Cinemic Universe: An Official Timeline,” feels final for now. However, let me remind you that reference books like this are often updated and reissued with new editions. So, while she’s currently written off, there’s a chance Scarlet Witch could return to life at some point in the timeline, making her story far from over. This brings us to “Agatha All Along,” where we might just find out what’s next for our beloved Wanda Maximoff.
The debut episode of the latest Disney+ series introduces “Agnes” as a detective probing the emergence of an unidentified woman, or Jane Doe. This mysterious figure, who appears out of nowhere and sports burned fingers, seems to be connected to Wanda, given this clue. As the story unfolds within the episode, her toe-tag miraculously displays the name “Wanda Maximoff.” However, it’s later revealed that Agatha exploits this moment to shatter a three-year-old spell cast upon her by Wanda, which means everything presented in the investigation may have transpired only within Agatha’s mind. Therefore, the veracity of Wanda’s supposed demise is called into question.
Many people speculate that the enigmatic “Teen” character in Agatha All Along could be Wanda’s son Billy, and his travels along the Witches Road might result in reviving Wanda, assuming she has passed away in this particular universe. Regardless of whether this occurs or not, there are numerous other universes inhabited by Wanda, and since the multiverse remains vastly expansive, any one of those could re-emerge within the Marvel Cinematic Universe at any given moment.
