As a fan who cherishes every moment of an artist’s journey, I find Dylan O’Brien’s audition story for “Frozen II” nothing short of amusing and endearing. It’s not often we get to see such a talented individual trying their hand at something they’re not quite comfortable with, only to share the hilarious tale years later.
In preparation for his portrayal of Dan Aykroyd in the upcoming 2024 film “Saturday Night“, it’s been disclosed that Dylan O’Brien had aspirations to be part of the “Frozen II” cast, another esteemed ensemble. However, he humorously admitted that he swiftly understood he lacked the qualifications to portray a resident of Arendelle.
O’Brien didn’t mention who he tried out for, but my gut feeling suggests that he likely auditioned for a character introduced later in the film. This assumption stems from the fact that only the original cast sang songs in the soundtrack of the 2019 movie. Here is his account of the events as shared on Late Night:
It seemed unlikely that I would be chosen since the role required someone with both acting and singing abilities. However, despite not having checked if they were looking for such a person, I sang for the casting associate anyway, simply because sometimes doing so can feel rewarding.
Hey, to even be called into Walt Disney Animation to be considered is a rather big honor, isn’t it?
Yet, O’Brien entered the audition somewhat hesitant regarding his vocal abilities, which unfortunately didn’t work out for him, as one might expect. Keeping this in mind, he carried on with his narrative in a casual manner.
This woman, struggling slightly, inquired if I could reach the chorus promptly as she needed to gauge my vocal range. In the first verse, I found myself adrift a bit, you understand? Reluctantly, she requested more, so I obliged, attempting a higher pitch, but unfortunately, it didn’t turn out well.
It seems like Dylan O’Brien found himself in an uncomfortable situation, yet considering how compelling the tale becomes, it might have been worth the unease, as he too mentioned.
When she responded with ‘Ok, ok!’ to me, it’s a phrase I’ll always remember. She followed up by expressing her gratitude for my visit and mentioned that they might require a more powerful singer. I was already agreeing, saying ‘Yeah, I know.’ In response, I thanked her for having me and chuckled.
In case you missed it, O’Brien shared his tale during an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers, where he was promoting his latest film, Saturday Night. Here’s a link to the video below:
Although there’s a hint of shy awkwardness surrounding that story, Dylan O’Brien has admitted that he looks back on it with fondness. It seems like one of those instances where an actor stepped out of their comfort zone, but the role didn’t quite suit them perfectly. Kudos to him for giving it a shot!
Hey there! It’s possible that he may get another opportunity in either Frozen 3 or 4 if he’s willing to endure the process again. Disney Animation Studios are currently working on a sequel for their highly successful Disney princess franchise, Frozen, which has been one of their most popular titles ever. Jennifer Lee is set to pen and direct the third installment, but as of now, we don’t have a release date yet. We’ll make sure to keep you updated with any news we hear about the movie!
Instead of anticipating Dylan O’Brien to appear as a Disney character, you can catch him on the big screen in “Saturday Night” starting October 11. Despite admitting he didn’t put much preparation into portraying Dan Aykroyd, the comedy and his acting have been highly praised by critics. However, it seems that singing isn’t among his numerous skills.
