As a gamer who grew up in the 90s, I hold a special place in my heart for TV shows like Family Matters. It was a staple of ABC’s TGIF lineup and provided countless hours of entertainment during those formative years. So when I heard that series star Jaleel White isn’t keen on the idea of a revival, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of admiration and disappointment.
As a dedicated fan, I’ve noticed that TV spinoffs, resurrections, and reboots have been shaping the entertainment world lately, but unfortunately, not every beloved classic series has received a facelift. One such gem is the iconic “Family Matters” show, which undeniably holds a special place among ABC’s TGIF lineup. Given its storied history, one might assume that a continuation or spin-off would be in the pipeline. However, it seems that series star Jaleel White isn’t on board with reviving the sitcom. Personally, I can see his perspective and agree with him to some extent.
Recently at a ’90s Convention in Florida, Jaleel White participated in a panel where he reminisced about his career, particularly his memorable role as Steve Urkel, the lovable nerd. During this event, the former child star expressed some reservations about the possibility of the show being rebooted. He shared that despite careful consideration over the years, he still cherishes the franchise, much like many fans do today. However, it’s this thoughtful analysis that has led him to believe that a remake might not be necessary.
It’s the toughest question I’ve had to answer for a very long time. But I really study why our shows work. And it has nothing to do with me not loving our old property, are you kidding me? I love Family Matters more than any of you guys could ever love Family Matters. I also know our strengths and weaknesses the way a coach would know his lineup. I’m not going to try us out on the field for anything less than absolute victory.
Initially, I’d like to express my gratitude as a fan, for the actor portraying Sonic the Hedgehog demonstrating such self-awareness towards the show that brought him fame. I wouldn’t dream of criticizing any artist eager to rejuvenate their own production for the audience. However, I must acknowledge the admirable awareness shown by this individual regarding potential issues with the series resonating well with contemporary viewers. The former Grown Ups cast member also highlighted (through People) one significant hurdle a sequel series might encounter from a narrative perspective:
A significant aspect of Family Matters was the ongoing storyline where Steve never managed to win over the girl. Entering the scene as his alter ego Stefan added another layer to the show. However, if a Family Matters reboot were to have Steve already married to Laura, it would eliminate that tension and potentially disappoint fans. Upon watching just one episode, they might notice my voice is deeper now, which could anger them. Even though I considered introducing a love triangle between Michelle, Kellie, and myself in the absence of Michelle, without her presence, I don’t feel it would work as a straightforward Fuller House reboot.
Jaleel White is talking about Michelle Thomas, who played Steve Urkel’s character’s affectionate (and clingy) girlfriend, Myra Monkouse, on the show. Tragically, she passed away from a rare type of cancer in 1998, just after the series concluded. Due to her significant role in the show, her absence would be strongly felt in any potential revival.
Previously on “Total Blackout,” the insightful host aptly noted that replicating the humorous tension from the original series might be challenging without Myra. Additionally, the actor who found romance playing Stefan Urquelle made further insightful comments:
Is it seriously being considered to remake Family Matters without modern technology like smartphones? It seems odd because the original charm didn’t rely on these elements and feels like it should remain in the ’90s. However, there’s a balance that needs to be struck between preserving the past and acknowledging the present. I’m passionate about maintaining the essence of Family Matters while also incorporating some contemporary elements if I have the opportunity to work on it.

In recent years, not just the actor who played Urkel on “Family Matters” has mentioned the possibility of a revival. Some cast members have mused about what such a project might entail. Among them, original Harriette Winslow actress Jo Marie Payton stated that she wouldn’t entertain the idea of reprising her role in a reboot unless Jamie Foxworth’s Judy Winslow character was also involved.
Some people might find it disappointing to learn that Jaleel White isn’t eager to resurrect Family Matters at every opportunity. It’s admirable, though, to see an actor who approaches his work with such thoughtfulness.
