Kelsey Grammer Reveals Why Frasier Had To Return to This Familiar Setting in Season 2

As a long-time fan of classic sitcoms, I must say that the return of Frasier to its roots in Seattle is music to my ears. Having grown up with the original series and its quirky characters, it’s a delight to see Roz Doyle (Peri Gilpin) rejoining the cast in a more substantial role.

The comeback of the revived “Frasier” series continues with its second season airing soon. In one of the upcoming episodes, titled “Thank You, Dr. Crane,” set for October 31, we find Dr. Frasier Crane, portrayed by Kelsey Grammer, returning to his roots in Seattle – where the original series was based. For those who may have missed Frasier’s journey after the original series ended, our beloved character has been living in Boston since his introduction during “Cheers” third season. Roz Doyle, played by Peri Gilpin, is set for a larger role as a result of Frasier’s return to Seattle. Recently, Grammer, who stars in and produces the show, spoke with Parade Magazine about why they felt it was essential to revisit this familiar setting.

The situation revolves around bringing Roz to Boston since we needed a genuine reason for her return. Not just because people were eager to see Roz again, but because we wanted a compelling, authentic reason. We wanted to incorporate Roz into a crucial and significant part of our production, which was why she had to leave Seattle, hence the journey. This is one aspect of our plan.

Apart from Gilpin, other ex-KACL coworkers are set to appear in “Thank You, Dr. Crane” alongside Dan Butler as Bob “Bulldog” Briscoe and Edward Hibbert as Gil Chesterton. Unlike the new cast of Paramount+’s Frasier reboot where Kelsey Grammer took the lead role, Gilpin and Bebe Neuwirth (who played Dr. Lilith Sternin on Cheers and the original Frasier) made brief appearances during the revival’s first season. Now, Roz is returning for a significant part in the upcoming sequel series.

Chris Harris and Joe Cristalli, the showrunners of Frasier, have previously talked about Kelsey Gilpin’s return during the second season. In a recent conversation with CinemaBlend, they mentioned that the plan was always to give the actress a more significant role for the sophomore season. However, they wanted to find an “authentic way” to incorporate her into the storyline.

Harris mentioned that Joe, Kelsey, and he collaborated on a plan, which led to the idea that Roz’s daughter Alice is now attending the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, making her more accessible in Boston. This situation offers us some exciting opportunities, as Alice will be featured in several episodes, gradually integrating herself into our group. We can delve deeper into the upcoming generation of characters from the original series by doing so,” Harris explained.

Indeed, Roz coming back may spark anticipation among fans for a romantic plotline between her and Frasier. However, this could potentially become an awkward situation since Roz’s daughter, Alice (played by Greer Grammer), is set to create tension in Frasier’s son’s love life during the current season.

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, let me tell you that Frasier features Kelsey Grammer, Jack Cutmore-Scott, Nicholas Lyndhurst, Toks Olagundoye, Anders Keith, and Jess Salgueiro in its cast for season 2. In addition to the regular cast, we’ll also see guest appearances by Rachel Bloom, Patricia Heaton, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Amy Sedaris. Harriet Sansom Harris will return to her role as Bebe Glazer in this exciting season!

Season 2 of the Paramount+ show “Frasier” began on September 18 with a double episode release. Fresh episodes will be broadcast each Thursday up until November 14 on the streaming service. The original “Frasier” series can be streamed in its entirety on Hulu, Disney+, and Paramount+.
