In this new rendition, Mescal assumes the role of an adult version of Lucius Verus II, a nephew to the emperor Commodus, previously depicted by Joaquin Phoenix in the original film. After being subjected to slavery, Lucius makes his way back to Rome, not as a ruler, but as a gladiator seeking retribution and power some two decades after the events of the initial Gladiator saga.

Beyond merely being a gladiator, Lucius harbors aspirations for power and retribution. He’s climbing the ladder within the gladiatorial world. “Rome has stripped me of everything,” he warns Macrinus at one point in the trailer, “but I will exact my vengeance.” This comes after demanding the head of Roman General Marcus Acacius, portrayed by Pedro Pascal, who had previously reduced him to slavery.
Ultimately, Lucius states that he doesn’t strive for power, but rather to liberate Rome from individuals like them,” as Macrinus, Marcus Acacius, and others who govern Rome harshly watch from a colossal Coliseum stage constructed in Malta.
The sequel to “Gladiator II” is planned for a major launch by Paramount Pictures around Thanksgiving, and it’s worth noting that director Scott is said to be brainstorming concepts for “Gladiator 3” in the future.
