As a seasoned gamer with a deep passion for both virtual and real-life narratives, I eagerly anticipate the release of Maura Delpero’s masterpiece, “Vermiglio”. Having grown up immersed in the tales of World War II, I can’t help but feel a profound connection to this story. The setting, the characters, and the underlying themes resonate with my own family history, making it all the more intriguing.
Italy is entering Maura Delpero’s World War II drama, titled “Vermiglio,” in the competition for the Best International Film category at the 2025 Oscars.
Last month, Vermilion made its debut at the Venice Film Festival, winning the prestigious Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize. Shortly following its North American premiere in Toronto, Sideshow and Janus Films secured the rights to distribute the movie domestically.
1944 finds us in the mountainous village of Vermiglio, nestled within the Italian Alps. The film chronicles a local family whose peace is shattered by the unexpected arrival of a war-weary soldier from a distant battlefield. As the world slowly recovers from World War II’s devastation, the residents of Vermiglio confront their own tribulations. The talented cast includes Tommaso Ragno, Giuseppe De Domenico, Roberta Rovelli, Martina Scrinzi, Orietta Notari, and Carlotta Gamba.
Building upon the success of my 2019 directorial debut, Maternal, I’m thrilled to share with you my next project, Vermiglio. This film is a deeply personal narrative, inspired by my own family history. The feature was jointly produced by me, Carole Baraton, Pauline Boucheny Pinon, Jacques-Henry Bronckart, and Tatiana Kozar. Vermiglio is a collaborative production between Cinedora and RAI Cinema, with additional production from Charades Production and Versus Production. Anonymous Content has also graciously participated in its production.
Italy has earned the most Oscars for Best International Feature, winning 14 out of 33 times it’s been nominated. France comes in second with 12 wins from 41 nominations. The last Italian movie to take home this prize was Paolo Sorrentino’s “The Great Beauty” in 2013.
On December 17th, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences plans to reveal the movies that made the shortlist for the 2025 Oscars. The nominees will be disclosed on January 17th, 2025. And finally, the 97th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for March 2nd, Sunday.
