Producer of Todd Haynes’ Gay Romance Movie on Joaquin Phoenix’s Exit: “The Idea That Todd’s Time Was Wasted Is Tragic”

Christine Vachon from Killer Films, a frequent collaborator of Todd Haynes who was slated to produce his film featuring Joaquin Phoenix, has disclosed the true details and expressed her view on the saddest aspect of the situation after Haynes departed as filming was about to commence.

At the San Sebastian Film Festival, Vachon discussed the long-term viability of filmmaking amidst industry shifts on Tuesday. In response to queries about Phoenix abandoning a gay romance production (allegedly leaving hundreds of crew members jobless), she expressed her deepest sympathy for Haynes.

To put it simply, as a devoted admirer, I’m sharing what transpired, and it’s all out in the open for everyone to witness. If there were juicy tidbits to share, believe me, I would, but alas, there are none. It was an unfortunate event. The saddest aspect of it, from my perspective, is that Todd Hughes, at 62, has a limited number of films left in his career. In my opinion, he’s one of the most remarkable film artists of his generation, and I can’t help but feel for the potential opportunities lost due to this situation.

To Vachon, it’s tragic that his time spent working closely with Joaquin didn’t lead to a movie, and he can’t move past this disappointment. He feels we missed out on another film by Todd Haynes, and he views this as an enormous cultural loss, even going so far as to call it ‘criminal.’

Previously, Vachon described the circumstances following Phoenix’s departure as “a horrific scenario.

Killer Films, led by Vachon and Pamela Koffler, are at the helm of an upcoming movie, currently unnamed. This film features Danny Ramirez, known for his role in “Captain America: Brave New World.” The story is reportedly centered around a passionate love affair between two men during the 1930s.

Right now, Phoenix is promoting Todd Phillips’ upcoming movie “Joker: Folie a Deux,” set to release in October following its debut at the Venice Film Festival this month. There, he chose not to express his personal thoughts about the events, stating, “The other creative minds aren’t present to voice their opinions, and it doesn’t feel appropriate for me to do so. I’m unsure if it would be beneficial, so I think I won’t.” He further explained.
