As a seasoned gamer who has traversed through countless realms of entertainment, I must confess that my heart skips a beat when I hear Zachary Quinto’s name associated with yet another intriguing TV series. Having grown up on the gripping tales spun by Heroes in the late 2000s, it’s fascinating to see how his journey has come full circle, both on and off-screen.
In the near future, the medical drama “Brilliant Minds” won’t be Zachary Quinto’s first rodeo on NBC. Previously, during the late 2000s, Quinto portrayed the antagonist Sylar in the fittingly titled superhero series “Heroes“. As he shared with Jimmy Fallon on a recent episode of “The Tonight Show“, the links between these two shows extend beyond just being network-related.
In simpler terms, Quntio said that the central theme of the show ‘Heroes’ is that a solar eclipse awakens people to their hidden powers, and then the story delves into what this newfound ability signifies. Interestingly, we began filming ‘Brilliant Minds’ on April 8, which happened to be the day of a solar eclipse. So, it’s quite symbolic that we’ve come full circle.
The characters Quntio portrayed in Brilliant Minds and Heroes share some common themes, but they are fundamentally different. In Brilliant Minds, he played Doctor Olivier Wolf, a creative neurologist who seeks to grasp brain function to aid his patients. On the other hand, Sylar from Heroes is a villainous character who craves understanding of the brain for nefarious purposes, using it to acquire superhuman abilities by examining the brains of others with powers. Therefore, while they may seem similar on the surface, they have distinct motivations and roles.
Still, Quntio’s new role has people understandably thinking about Sylar, even if Dr. Wolf seems like a much nicer guy. Ahead of Brilliant Minds’ premiere on Monday, September 23, here’s a brief explainer of who Sylar was on Heroes.
In the premiere season (the standout one) of Heroes, Sylar first appeared; however, for the initial episodes, he remained hidden in the background, with Zachary Quinto not even portraying him until the seventh episode. This character emerged as the primary antagonist of the season, a ruthless serial killer on a quest to capture individuals with supernatural abilities. His unique ability allows him to mimic these powers after observing them within their minds. As the story unfolds, it’s disclosed that Sylar’s true name is Gabriel Gray. Born to a watchmaker, Sylar was influenced by his mother’s belief in his uniqueness, which led him down a path of evil. Upon gaining his superpowers, he was further fueled by an evolutionary drive to increase his strength and accumulate additional abilities.
In Season 1, titled Genesis, the central storyline brings together all the principal characters in a bid to thwart Sylar and prevent a looming nuclear disaster in New York City. This mission begins when they work to save Claire (played by Hayden Panettiere) from Sylar’s lethal grasp. If successful, Claire’s power of regeneration would render Sylar virtually invincible, making it impossible to stop him.
In the final episode of the series, Sylar is outsmarted but not eliminated, remaining a significant menace throughout the remainder of Heroes. A recurring theme in the show, particularly after its impressive first season, is Sylar struggling with his transformation into a villain. During Season 2, Sylar seeks to recover his abilities after the events of the first season finale. However, by Season 3, he’s striving to comprehend his desire for murder and locating his father. This journey is quite disjointed, though.
Season 3 concludes as Sylar (Jimmy Jean-Louis) undergoes mind control, convinced he is Nathan Petrelli (Adrian Pasdar), the man he had previously killed due to a recurrence of his appetite for acquiring powers, a psychological collapse caused by his shape-shifting abilities, and a string of deceits and intricate character relationships that are difficult to summarize succinctly.

In the last season of “Heroes”, Sylar initially assumes Nathan’s identity and thinks he is the late Petrelli, but his true character soon emerges. Once he takes full control, he embarks on a villainous path, yet the experience alters him, making him reluctant to kill. Despite this change, he remains a clearly evil character. However, after being confined within his own mind for what seems like three years (in reality just 12 hours), Sylar ultimately accepts and comprehends himself, eventually able to resist his desires and inner demons.
In the final episode of the series, Sylar assumes the role of a hero and refers to himself as such, wrapping up his intricate journey.
You can watch Heroes now streaming on Peacock.
If the details seem a bit complex, just remember that following through with watching Heroes from start to finish can be intriguing (though complex) enjoyment. It’s likely that Brilliant Minds won’t be as unpredictable as Heroes, but it will certainly star Quinto as a man who has an affinity for intellect.
Fresh installments of “Brilliant Minds” air every Monday on NBC at 10:00 PM / 9:00 PM Central Time, and you can catch up on past episodes by streaming them on Peacock.
