As a die-hard fan of the Scream franchise who has lived through countless Ghostface attacks and sleepless nights thanks to these iconic movies, I must say that the news of Scream 7 is like a breath of fresh air. The return of Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott was an exciting development, but I’m hoping for more nostalgia with the potential comeback of Patrick Dempsey as Mark Kincaid.

The horror genre has been thriving for years now, to the delight of fans like myself. Some of the best horror movies returned to theaters with new sequels, including the Scream franchise. The last two movies (which can be streamed with a Paramount+ subscription) were released in quick succession, and a seventh slasher is currently in development. As Courteney Cox confirms she’s yet to sign on for Scream 7, she’s advocating for another franchise OG to be brought back.

Information about Scream 7 is scarce, but longtime followers of the series were ecstatic when it was disclosed that Neve Campbell would reprise her role as Sidney Prescott, the final girl. Fans are eagerly anticipating additional casting updates, and personally, I’m hoping Patrick Dempsey might return as Mark Kincaid. Although Courtney Cox hasn’t officially agreed to it, “Scream 7” is moving forward, and there’s no hint that she won’t reprise her role as Gale Weathers again. Here’s hoping the contract gets finalized quickly.

With Neve Campbell leaving Scream VI due to a payment disagreement, it now makes Courteney Cox the sole actor who’s appeared in every Scream film. Given this, it seems that getting her on board for the seventh movie is likely a top priority for the production company.

Later during that interview, Cox expressed a desire for David Arquette to reappear in the upcoming horror film. Although Dewey met his end in the 2022 version of Scream, she suggests there might be a way for one of the franchise’s original trio to make a surprise comeback. In her own words:

Despite comprehending their motivations, it’s astonishing that another character wasn’t included; Dewey, adored by ‘Scream’ enthusiasts, must be part of the storyline somehow. They need to find a way.

Points were made. Dewey is definitely a beloved character with Scream fans, which is why his brutal death in the 2022 movie was so heartbreaking. And moviegoers would likely be psyched to see him return, but the question is: how?

There are several potential methods for Arquette to reprise his role as Dewey in Scream 7. One possibility could be a video segment similar to Randy’s appearance in Scream 3, or a flashback scene involving Gale. Alternatively, director Kevin Williamson might employ another plot device that has been used in recent sequels.

In the final two “Scream” films, a spectral or mental image of Billy Loomis appeared to Sam Carpenter. This was an engaging method to reintroduce a beloved character, so perhaps Gale and/or Sidney could have similar encounters with Dewey in this fashion? It’s simply an idea.
