He has addressed the recent criticism concerning the depiction of an alleged incestuous relationship in his Netflix series, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. Although a project may be rooted in reality, artistic license often necessitates certain alterations. Sometimes facts are distorted when the boundaries of truth become uncertain or unverified, while other times modifications are made to enhance enjoyment. Determining the entire truth can be challenging due to conflicting perspectives among real-life figures regarding what constitutes the truth itself.
In the Netflix series “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story“, some viewers feel that the creators have gone too far in their creative liberties. Throughout its nine episodes, there are strong implications that the brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez shared a relationship that was almost incestuous. This portrayal has upset many viewers and even drawn criticism from the real-life characters of the show. Despite this controversy, the creator, Murphy, has addressed the backlash and seems to be defending their creative decision.
In a conversation with Entertainment Tonight, Murphy explained that the depiction of potential incestuous relationships between the brothers in the miniseries offers diverse perspectives and theories from those who were part of the sensational case.

More recently, Erik Menéndez voiced his concerns about the miniseries, claiming he saw untruths portrayed during the Netflix true-crime drama by stating:
I felt that we had progressed past the deceitful and destructive depictions of Lyle on the show, as it seemed to have fabricated a distorted character based on obvious and scandalous falsehoods.
In response to Erik’s comments, Murphy defended himself by stating that it was his duty to present all perspectives in the story as he put it: “I feel compelled to share both sides, given the importance of accuracy and understanding.
In this narrative, four individuals played significant roles, however, two have sadly passed away, while the remaining two are still living and contributing their unique perspectives. Yet, we felt it was crucial for us as storytellers to also present the parents’ viewpoint, which we did by conducting thorough research. Additionally, the creator emphasized that a major focus of the story lies in the brothers’ allegations concerning abuse.
It strikes me as peculiar that he’s made a statement without watching the series himself. I can understand why someone might find it challenging to see their personal experiences portrayed on TV. What I find intriguing is that his commentary doesn’t touch upon the fact that approximately two-thirds of our show revolves around the allegations and events depicted, which we handle with great care and provide a platform for victims to speak openly about it.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but feel excited about the upcoming documentary on Netflix, “The Menendez Brothers,” scheduled to premiere on October 7th. This intriguing piece will reportedly showcase the brothers’ perspectives through phone interviews conducted from their prison phones at the Donovan Correctional Facility where they’ve been since their conviction in 1996.
