'They Have Fought Like Hell': Chicago P.D. Boss Weighs In On The Burzek Family Unit And Wedding Plans In Season 12

As a dedicated fan who has witnessed the rollercoaster ride that is One Chicago’s Intelligence Unit, I am overjoyed to see Burgess and Ruzek, or Burzek as we fans lovingly call them, sailing smoothly into Season 12 of Chicago P.D. After years of heartache, near-misses, and a proposal that had me tearing up my living room carpet (thank goodness for vacuum cleaners), it’s refreshing to see these two finally finding some semblance of peace.

In the television schedule for 2024, Chicago P.D., having concluded Tracy Spiridakos’ tenure, will resume its run and mark the beginning of a new phase for the Intelligence Unit. As this cop drama within the One Chicago universe isn’t typically known for joyous endings (think: Upstead), I seized the opportunity to discuss with showrunner Gwen Sigan the fate of Burgess and Ruzek moving forward. After getting engaged in Season 11, their future appeared promising in a series that often delves into darkness. Now, let’s delve into what lies ahead for Season 12: some exciting insights from the showrunner have been shared!

Burzek (the character) and his daughter Makayla make up a family without formally exchanging “I do”s. It’s understandable that actress Marina Squerciati might feel a bit apprehensive about the future for this couple. If you’d like to revisit the proposal episode, it’s available with a Peacock subscription. In an interview prior to the Season 12 premiere on September 25, I observed that viewers would be pleased to see that Burzek escaped disaster even after experiencing a moment of joy earlier this year. When asked about this, showrunner Gwen Sigan replied:

We aim to maintain their current position. I share the sentiment that they’ve been through battles unimaginable, endured hardships, and reached a stage where they stand united. Each day, they are making a conscious choice to continue this journey together. ‘This is our shared ground. It’s us, side by side, moving forward.’

Don’t worry, fans of Burzek! It appears that Chicago P.D.’s longest-lasting couple is holding strong as we approach Season 12, and it seems their family unit remains intact as well. This is good news, as the showrunner isn’t joking when he says Burgess and Ruzek have been through a lot to reach where they are now. In other words, things are looking good for these two!

They’ll be quite strong, and undoubtedly, when issues arise, they’ll need to handle them collectively, as a family, an engaged couple, and a pair preparing for their wedding. With all the joy and pressures that come with these events, they have a lot on their plates individually. What’s great is that their relationship will serve as a solid foundation they can always return to in times of need.

It’s unclear if much of their wedding preparations will be shown, but it seems Burgess and Ruzek aren’t opting for a secret elopement like Upstead. Grand weddings like April and Ethan’s on “Chicago Med” or Brett and Casey’s emotional fish store wedding on “Chicago Fire” might be unlikely on “Chicago P.D.” Here’s hoping the relationship between Burzek goes as smoothly as possible, no matter the circumstances.

Inquire about the progress of “Chicago P.D.” in its twelfth season, as it starts to air on NBC. I posed this query to Gwen Sigan in mid-September, and she disclosed the following information:

At the moment, we’re busy working on Episodes 7 and 8. As things stand, that’s where we find ourselves. Here’s an amusing thought: Even though our premiere is yet to come, we’ve actually been working on this project since June.

If the production of Chicago P.D. continues as per its typical routine without disruptions caused by COVID-19 or writers/actors strikes, then the team was almost ready to script the Season 12 fall finale during the interview. (Typically, the fall finale is the ninth episode in a One Chicago season.) So, fans can anticipate a full season this time around.

On Wednesday, September 25th at 10 p.m. Eastern Time, Season 12 of Chicago P.D. begins airing, immediately followed by the start of Season 13 for Chicago Fire at 9 p.m. ET, and then Season 10 of Chicago Med kicks off with new showrunner Allen MacDonald at 8 p.m. ET, all on NBC. If you need a reminder about last season’s ending, you can catch up by streaming the finales on Peacock.
