Netflix denies Bade Miyan Chote Miyan producer Vashu Bhagnani’s non-payment of dues allegations; says Pooja Entertainment ‘owes’ them

As someone who has spent a considerable part of my life navigating the intricate and often tumultuous world of Bollywood productions, I can’t help but find myself drawn into the ongoing saga between Vashu Bhagnani and Netflix. The allegations and counter-allegations, the summons, and the legal battles – it feels like a scene straight out of one of our blockbuster movies, only this time, it’s real life!

Netflix has countered accusations stemming from a lawsuit brought forth by Mumbai production company, Pooja Entertainment, helmed by Vashu Bhagnani. The streaming service refuted these claims, stating that it is actually owed money by Bhagnani’s production house. However, Bhagnani asserts that Netflix did not meet its financial obligations and accused them of deception following the completion and distribution of films produced by Pooja Entertainment.

A representative from Netflix has refuted the accusations in an official statement, stressing that it is actually Pooja Entertainment who owe Netflix money. The spokesperson added, “These allegations are entirely baseless. In fact, it’s Pooja Entertainment that owes Netflix funds. We have a robust history of collaborating with the Indian creative industry and are actively engaging with the relevant authorities to settle this disagreement.

In response to allegations of unpaid funds by director Ali Abbas Zafar, Vashu Bhagnani accused Netflix India of deceit in an interview with The Economic Times. He asserts that Netflix owes him approximately 473.7 million Indian Rupees and accuses them of a conspiracy regarding the rights to three films: Hero No 1, Mission Raniganj, and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. Vashu has lodged a complaint against Los Gatos Production Services India, Zoo Digital India, and several executives from both companies. It is reported that officials from Los Gatos have been summoned for questioning by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW).

Lately, the film producer has been in the spotlight due to some disputes. Earlier this year, the underperformance of Bade Miyan Chote Miyan led to accusations from crew members that he failed to settle his financial obligations. Additionally, Ali Abbas Zafar, the director of the film, alleged that Bhagnani owed him approximately 73 million Indian rupees.

Based on these allegations, producers Vashu Bhagnani and Jackky Bhagnani from Pooja Entertainment have decided to take legal action against Ali Abbas. They claim that Ali Abbas misused subsidy funds given by Abu Dhabi during the film’s production, totaling approximately Rs 9.50 crores. The lawsuit alleges fraudulent activities, including coercion, breach of trust, extortion, blackmail, intimidation, harassment, defamation, money laundering, and using a shell company in Abu Dhabi to transfer these funds illegally.
