With her unique blend of humor and poignant storytelling, Rao has once again demonstrated that she is a force to be reckoned with in Indian cinema.

Film director Kiran Rao is thrilled to announce that her second film, Laapataa Ladies, has been chosen as India’s submission for the 2025 Academy Awards. This entertaining movie, featuring Nitanshi Goel, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Pratibha Ranta, tells the amusing tale of two brides who accidentally switch places during a train ride. In a recent interview, Kiran emphasized the role humor plays in tackling sensitive women’s issues in films, stating that cinema should never feel like a lecture.

During the second session at the India Today Conclave 2024 titled “Take II: How Women are Reshaping Indian Cinema,” Kiran Rao emphasized her approach of incorporating humor to address sensitive topics concerning women in her filmmaking.

Rao expressed that we aimed to address these topics in our narrative using humor, as it’s not enjoyable for moviegoers to receive a lecture. In his opinion, humor is an effective and appealing method for addressing challenging subjects.

Kiran Rao expressed the importance of creating more films centered on women in our cinema industry. She emphasized that filmmakers should prioritize producing movies with strong female leads, and to support female scriptwriters, producers, actresses, and projects led by women. Furthermore, Rao mentioned her desire to narrate stories featuring compelling female characters.

In an open discussion about the motivation for directing Laapataa Ladies, Kiran Rao revealed that the tale of two girls seeking freedom, chances, and a voice resonated with her deeply. She also mentioned her intention to maintain the story as authentic and believable by keeping it grounded and organic. The filmmaker emphasized that this was a significant factor in the audience’s positive reception towards her recent directorial work.

Kiran Rao elaborated on the benefits she experienced by casting newcomers in Laapataa Ladies. According to Rao, this approach allowed viewers not to be distracted by familiar faces, enabling them to concentrate more on the cinematic universe portrayed in the film.

Previously, Kiran Rao expressed her profound honor and immense joy on Instagram following the selection of Laapataa Ladies as India’s entry for the upcoming Academy Awards. In essence, she shared that it was a great privilege and an exhilarating moment for her to have her directorial work selected to represent India at the Oscars.

After learning that their 2024 film would represent India at esteemed awards, Aamir Khan shared his delight and expressed pride in his team, including his former wife, Rao. The actor of Laal Singh Chaddha also expressed gratitude to the selection committee of the Film Federation of India for choosing their movie.

Under the guidance of Assamese director Jahnu Barua, a 13-strong panel from the organization chose Kiran and Aamir’s movie, titled “Laapataa Ladies,” as their representative film for the Oscars.

In an interview with India Today, Nitanshi Goel, who played Phool Kumari in Kiran Rao’s movie, discussed how they celebrated the recent success of the film. Nitanshi revealed that they had a small celebration within their WhatsApp group.

17-year-old actress, Nitashi, mentioned that she was eagerly awaiting the director’s assurance that their film would be India’s official submission to the Academy Awards.
