Thunderbolts* Star Shuts Down Bizarre AI Speculation Surrounding MCU Movies Poster

As a cinephile with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that the recent AI speculation surrounding the poster for Marvel’s upcoming film, Thunderbolts, has taken me on a wild ride reminiscent of the twists and turns in M. Night Shyamalan’s movies. It’s quite fascinating to witness fans’ eagerness to jump to conclusions without thorough examination or fact-checking.

Initially, the first trailer for the movie Thunderbolts sparked overwhelming enthusiasm among Marvel enthusiasts. However, the unveiling of its official poster led to peculiar conjectures about potential AI involvement. As the uproar subsides and fans acknowledge their mistake, Lewis Pullman, who portrays Bob/Sentry in the upcoming film, has now addressed this unusual speculation. In the poster, Pullman is partially obscured on the bottom left corner, creating an optical illusion that makes it seem like his character has six fingers. A quick look reveals this isn’t the case, but some fans were too hasty, jumping to accusations of AI and causing a stir. You can view the poster below for yourself.

In an interview with Collider, Tom Cruise, the star of Top Gun: Maverick, humorously dismissed rumors suggesting AI was used on the movie poster. After all the intense speculation, even he found himself doubting it and closely scrutinized the artwork for confirmation. He clarified his stance by saying:

I’ve come across the topic of six-fingered individuals. Upon closer inspection, there seems to be no error in their hands; what appears as a sixth finger is actually just the image being cropped at a specific point where it gives the impression of an extra digit or tip. However, upon further examination, this is not the case. All in all, I find this fascinating.

In the initial trailer for Thunderbolts, the main group of anti-hero characters come across Pullman’s character during a mission that appears to be aimed at their elimination. Escaping from a metallic container, the character then meets the rest of the team. While Sentry, who will become one of the MCU’s strongest characters, doesn’t demonstrate his abilities, we do see his civilian identity, Robert Reynolds, also known as Bob.

In Pullman’s film Thunderbolts, the main character, whom he has previously portrayed in a significant movie, is named Bob – just like the actor himself. His most recognized role so far was in the 2022 blockbuster, Top Gun: Maverick. In this film, Pullman played a trainee Top Gun pilot, Lt. Robert Floyd. Interestingly, while his fellow pilots received catchy nicknames (with Rooster being an exception), Lt. Floyd’s fighter pilot name was simply “Bob.” During an interview, Pullman humorously suggested expanding the “Bob Cinematic Universe.” The actor also shared that he receives some of his most heartwarming fan interactions from individuals who share his character’s nickname and appreciate him using it. Pullman explained this by saying:

Watching every film provides a unique bond with specific individuals, and with Top Gun’s character Bob, I’ve encountered countless wonderful men named Bob. They approach me and say, ‘Man, you’re carrying on the Bob legacy well.’ This shared connection allows for fascinating conversations. I feel incredibly thankful and privileged to be associated with the Bobs in some capacity.
