As a seasoned gamer and history enthusiast who has navigated through various timelines, I must say that “Hysteria!” has piqued my interest like a vintage arcade machine from the ’80s. The blend of retro aesthetics, horror, and the Satanic Panic era is a fascinating exploration of a period that left an indelible mark on our collective consciousness.

In a classic ’80s scene, you’ve got a boombox playing tunes, a cassette tape spinning, and a private moment in a room adorned with wallpaper. Suddenly, a masked killer makes an entrance, disrupting the peaceful atmosphere. This is the captivating opening shot from the trailer of Peacock’s upcoming retro horror series titled “Hysteria!“.

The film “Hysteria” transports viewers to the vibrant and eccentric 1980s, a time when accurate information was scarce and urban myths were widespread. In this era (and in reality), numerous accounts of Satanic rituals, often abusive in nature, were documented. The specifics of these dark activities varied depending on who you spoke to, with tales of human sacrifice, rock music, role-playing games, and a sinister plot to claim the souls of the world being among them.

“The overall situation was largely an amalgamation of shared delusions, stemming from linking unrelated crimes and a continually changing public narrative. There was no concrete proof to contradict it at any point along the way. However, the fear that arose from this hysteria still impacts our society today, shaping how we perceive the world and the stories we tell. Now, Hysteria! is highlighting the Satanic Panic, creating a classic horror slasher series for modern audiences.

Ryan Hudson, high school varsity quarterback and hometown hero, goes missing and the mystery is surrounded by cryptic Satanic symbols. As the community becomes increasingly fascinated with the potentially supernatural events happening in their town, a teenage heavy metal band of weirdos and outcasts picks up the demonic aesthetic and runs with it. Using the disappearance and possible death of a classmate to promote your musical ambitions is almost certainly in poor taste, but it’s probably forgivable for teenagers, and it’s certainly not a capital offense.

For decades, a fondness for the supernatural (often causing public alarm) has been characteristic of metal music. Typically, teenage members of a fictional band like Dethkrunch could leverage the imagery of darkness to craft their artistic persona and fanbase. However, instead of doing so, they become entangled in a local witch hunt during the peak of the Satanic Panic era. Truly earning your metal credentials can be quite authentic.

If not for the real murderer (and possibly otherworldly entities) at large, everything might have calmed down eventually due to mere hysteria. But alas, “Hysteria!” brings you a thrilling tale with Julie Bowen, Anna Camp, and horror legend Bruce Campbell. The series makes its debut on both USA Network and SYFY on October 18, 2024, and all eight episodes become available on Peacock the same day.
