‘Downton Abbey’ Cast, Creators Pay Tribute to Maggie Smith: “One of the Greatest Actors of Our Time”

As I sit here, surrounded by the flickering glow of my computer screen, I find myself reflecting upon the life and career of the extraordinary Dame Maggie Smith. A woman who, for six decades, graced our stages and screens with her unparalleled talent, her wit, and her indomitable spirit.

Maggie Smith’s family from Downton Abbey, along with various Hollywood figures, have been expressing their heartfelt tributes following the death of the beloved, Academy Award-winning actress, which occurred on Friday.

In addition to fame, she is recognized for her memorable portrayal of Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter movie series, along with roles in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, The Best Exotic Maragold Hotel, among other films.

On Friday, Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin, her sons, informed the BBC about the passing of Dame Maggie Smith. She died peacefully in a hospital this morning, on September 27th. Despite being a very private individual, she was surrounded by friends and family when she passed away. She leaves behind two sons and five adoring grandchildren who are deeply saddened by the loss of their remarkable mother and grandmother.

Julian Fellowes, the creator of Downton Abbey, expressed his feelings in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, stating, “Maggie Smith was a truly magnificent actress, and it was more than fortunate for us to be a part of the final chapter in her extraordinary career. Writing for her was always a pleasure; she was subtle, complex, intelligent, hilarious, and heart-wrenching. Working with her has been the highlight of my professional life, and I will forever cherish our time together.

Maggie was known by everyone she worked with for her keen observation, quick intellect, and exceptional skill,” said Hugh Bonneville, speaking to THR. “She was an iconic figure of her time and will continue to be remembered through her brilliant screen performances. My sympathies go out to her sons and extended family.

Michelle Dockery, known for her roles on both British television shows and movies, expressed in her statement, “Maggie was truly unique. I consider myself fortunate to have crossed paths with someone so unconventional. Her absence will be felt profoundly, and my sympathies are with her loved ones.

Gareth Neame, producer of Downton Abbey, expressed heartfelt tributes to the iconic actress: “Maggie Smith was an extraordinary actor during her time, a cherished member of the Downton Abbey family. Over six seasons and two films, she portrayed Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, delivering one of the most remarkable performances in television history. It was a privilege for the entire Downton Abbey team to work with her; her immense talent ranged from high comedy to profound tragedy. Off-screen, she formed special bonds with the other cast members, often offering guidance and support to the younger actors. Personally, it’s particularly poignant as my late grandfather directed one of her finest performances in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, which earned her her first Academy Award. Beyond Downton Abbey and Miss Jean Brodie, Maggie left an indelible mark on the world with her extraordinary career spanning decades and captivating audiences worldwide. There will only ever be one Maggie Smith, and she will be deeply missed. Our thoughts are with her family.
