As a seasoned art enthusiast with a soft spot for the emotional and sensorial, I was absolutely captivated by Grit Richter’s latest exhibition, “Breathe Out,” at Galerie Tanja Wagner in Berlin. Having traversed the vibrant underground music scene of Hamburg myself, I found a kinship with Richter’s ability to channel the power of sound into her visual art.

Tanja Wagner Gallery showcases a fresh solo exhibit by German artist Grit Richter, available for viewing in Berlin until November 8, 2024. This exhibition delves into the heartwarming essence of human connections through eight striking, large-scale art pieces. As an experienced figure within Hamburg’s music underground, Richter translates the profound impact of sound into her visual creations, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in her electrifying dreamscape.

Titled as if prompting meditation, “Breathe Out” focuses deeply on emotions, sensations, and memories. The artist’s storytelling skill unfolds vividly through a mix of radiant and rounded shapes, portraying characters in tender scenarios of love.

With a touch of irony and playfulness, this exhibition draws its theme from disconnection or misconnections. For example, “The Broken Hearts Society” showcases an interaction between two round, featureless figures bathed in a warm red and purple light. Their hands meet at the center of the painting – one hand offering a casual fist bump while the other half-reveals a heart. This artwork symbolizes ambiguity as the backdrop of starry skies hints at the cosmic nature of unrequited love.

Initially, the shapes and hues in “Breathe Out” appear harmonious visually. However, upon closer inspection, its symbolic elements convey a spirit of rebellion, subtly escaping from predetermined destiny. In a blend of ethereal shades and intertwining limbs, Richter’s artwork boldly invites and then lets you go.
