As a long-time admirer of fashion that transcends trends and speaks volumes about culture, I was absolutely captivated by Issey Miyake‘s Spring/Summer 2025 collection, “The Beauty of Paper.” Having spent years wandering through the tranquil landscapes of Japan, I’ve grown to appreciate the country’s deep connection with nature and its artisanal crafts.
For their Spring/Summer 2025 collection at Paris Fashion Week, Issey Miyake delved into the organic origins of paper as the theme for their show titled “Paper’s Grace.
At the event for the innovative women’s fashion collection, attendees received program notes written on washi – a kind of Japanese paper crafted from plants like shrubs and bushes. On the other hand, the seating provided for guests consisted of chairs made out of cylinders formed by compressed paper sheets, which the brand claims is a remnant from Issey Miyake’s pleat-making process technology.
Initially, washi served a purpose in making clothes. But under the imaginative leadership of Satoshi Kondo and his crew, the garments aimed to honor washi and the broader history of paper crafting.
The brand explained that they were curious about why paper brings comfort. This curiosity led to their exploration, which centered around the origin, production, and artistry of paper. The insights gathered sparked ideas for materials, methods, and designs via numerous fashion-related experiments.
The gathering not only serves its purpose, but also explores the profound bond between humans and paper, a bond that spans both the present and the past.
