As a Jewish individual with a deep connection to my family history, I can wholeheartedly affirm that Andy Samberg has proven himself to be a formidable dramatic actor. In “Lee,” he delivers an emotionally charged performance that resonates deeply, particularly when it comes to scenes involving the horrors of World War II and the Holocaust.
It’s no secret that Andy Samberg is a comedy legend, but Kate Winslet, Samberg’s co-star in “Lee,” has declared the Emmy-nominated star of SNL and Brooklyn Nine-Nine as a talented dramatic actor. Winslet, who boasts an Oscar, Emmy, and Grammy, portrays renowned American war correspondent and photographer Lee Miller in the upcoming film. Samberg takes on the role of David Scherman, a contemporary of Miller at Vogue magazine, who was also the man behind the famous photograph of Miller in Adolf Hitler’s bathtub in his Munich flat.
Another intense moment unfolds inside Hitler’s apartment where Samberg experiences the horrifying reality of Nazi oppression and the Holocaust alongside his coworker. All of a sudden, Winslet wraps her arms around Samberg as he cries in her supportive hold. Lee is an intense directorial debut by Ellen Kuras, a renowned cinematographer who has brought artistic brilliance to films like “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” “Summer of Sam,” “The Betrayal,” and “Neil Young: Heart of Gold.” Lee Miller’s unyielding determination resulted in some of the most impactful war images of the 20th century.
In the movie “Lee,” Andy Samberg, known for making audiences laugh in recent films like “Self Reliance” and “Palm Springs,” gives a powerful performance as David E. Scherman. He skillfully portrays the American photojournalist’s empathy and admiration for his colleague, Lee Miller. During a poignant scene in the drama, the characters of Miller and Scherman are depicted approaching a lengthy train of rail cars filled with deceased individuals.
