John Ashton, ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ Actor, Dies at 76

As a fan who grew up watching John Ashton grace our screens with his captivating performances, especially as Detective Sergeant John Taggart in the iconic Beverly Hills Cop series, I am deeply saddened by the news of his passing. His talent and charisma brought life to every character he played, from the gritty detective on the streets of Beverly Hills to the shrewd business associate Willie Jo Garr on Dallas.

The actor John Ashton, recognized for portraying John Taggart in the film ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ and subsequent installments, has passed away at the age of 76.

On a Thursday, Ashton passed away in Fort Collins, Colorado, as shared by his manager Alan Somers with The Hollywood Reporter. The reason for his demise wasn’t initially disclosed.

In the first two “Beverly Hills Cop” films, Detective Sergeant John Taggart was featured alongside Eddie Murphy and Judge Reinhold. Later on, Ashton Kutcher took over the role (now as a police chief) in the 2024 release titled “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F“.

Beyond my love for the Beverly Hills Cop series, I’ve had the pleasure of gracing screens in films and TV shows that span more than five decades. Some of these timeless works include “An Eye for an Eye” from 1973, “So Evil, My Sister” in 1974, “Cat Murkil and the Silks” from 1976, “Borderline” in 1979, and “Honky Tonk Freeway” in 1981. Each role I’ve played has been a unique journey, adding to my rich acting history.

In the more recent past, his acting roles include Sweet Deadly Dreams from 2006, Gone Baby Gone in 2007, Middle Men in 2009, and Lonesome Soldier in 2023. On television, he made appearances on shows like Columbus, Police Story, Barnaby Jones, and MASH.

In the year 1978-79, located in Dallas, he portrayed Willie Jo Gar, a business partner of JR’s, played by Larry Hagman. This character unintentionally leads to the demise of Julie Gray, a previous secretary and mistress of JR, who was played by Tina Louise.

Born on the 22nd of February, 1948, in Springfield, Massachusetts, John David Ashton was nurtured by his parents, Edward Richard Ashton Sr. and Eva May Ashton. They moved to Enfield, Connecticut, where he spent most of his childhood years. After completing his education at Enfield High School and Defiance College, he shifted to the University of Southern California, earning a BA in theater arts upon graduation.

Ashton is mourned by his siblings: Sharon Ann Ashton (together with her spouse, Montana State District Judge Kenneth R. Neill), Linda Jean Ashton, and his brother, Edward Richard (Ann) Ashton, Jr.

A memorial service for John will take place at a later time. If you’d like to make a donation in his honor, please consider sending it to Pathways Hospice Care, located at 305 Carpenter Road, Ft. Collins, CO 80525.
