Nicholas Alexander Chavez has recently gained a significant number of new admirers due to his role in Netflix’s “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” the second season of Ryan Murphy’s “Monster” anthology series. His Instagram followers more than doubled on the day of the miniseries premiere, leading many to wonder, “Where did this guy suddenly appear from?” However, for fans of the daytime drama “General Hospital,” Chavez was not an unknown entity.
In its 61st year, finding fresh talent with the potential to become major stars can be challenging for this soap opera, but they managed to do so when Chavez joined the show in 2021. It was evident that Chavez’s talents extended beyond simply walking the halls of General Hospital. It was just a matter of time before someone recognized his potential and offered him an opportunity that could propel him towards stardom.
Prior to joining “General Hospital”, Chavez had a common Hollywood narrative: a young man with lofty ambitions, ready for his chance to shine. He grew up in Houston, Texas, and attended Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of Arts for two years before moving to Los Angeles to focus on acting. However, the universe had other ideas, not just for Chavez, but for everyone worldwide. The COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020, affecting Chavez as well, causing him to temporarily move to Vero Beach, Florida, where he put his acting aspirations aside and took up a job at a car dealership. Yet, like many actors during the pandemic, he continued sending self-taped auditions. One of these auditions ultimately opened the door to a life-changing opportunity for him.
Nicholas Chavez Becomes Spencer Cassadine in General Hospital
One of the self-recorded audition tapes was submitted to the ABC daytime drama “General Hospital,” which was seeking an older portrayal for one of its characters, Spencer Cassadine. Spencer is the son of Nikolas Cassadine, a character with a rich history, primarily played by the late Tyler Christopher, but at that point, was being acted by Marcus Coloma since 2019. The last time “General Hospital” viewers saw Spencer, he was a boy, played by Nicolas Bechtel. In soap operas, it’s common to accelerate the age of child characters when storylines require more adult themes. When Spencer returns from boarding school, the role is now being played by Chavez as a young adult, and this is how the casting director, Mark Teschner, recalled discovering him.
From Florida, Nicholas submitted his audition tape, and since then, events took an extraordinary course. His performance on the show was nothing short of spectacular, exceeding all expectations. It’s always a gamble when it comes to actors; one hopes they’ll excel, but often, there are those who surpass even the highest expectations. Nicholas Chavez was one such actor – we knew he’d be good, but his performance took things to another level. In retrospect, we had a feeling he would shine, but the extent of his talent? Initially, Chavez found himself deeply involved in numerous tales, going by the name Spencer. Upon his comeback to Port Charles, he was determined to exact revenge on his father, who had feigned death and tricked everyone into thinking he was no more, all so he could stealthily reclaim the Cassadine legacy from Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart), who had seized it from him. Nikolas, now wedded to Ava Jerome (Maura West), a woman who significantly contributed to this deceit, aspires to reconcile with his son; however, Spencer has an entirely different agenda.
In a twist, Spencer starts portraying the role of Ryan Chamberlain, a serial killer known for stalking Ava and murdering her daughter to force them apart. Assisting him is Esme Prince, his girlfriend from boarding school who harbors secrets that motivate her to aid Spencer in his schemes. Yet, Spencer’s actions at General Hospital were not solely driven by evil intentions. Fate led him to cross paths with someone unexpectedly, who would significantly impact the character and make Chavez a vital part of one of the most beloved couples on the show in recent times.
The Evolution of Chavez’s Character in General Hospital
In due course, Spencer encounters Trina Robinson, who is portrayed by Tabyana Ali (previously played by Sydney Mikayla). Their relationship develops in the traditional give-and-take manner characteristic of classic love stories, seen across soap operas, primetime TV, and films. Despite having contrasting backgrounds – Trina coming from a more humble upbringing compared to Spencer’s opulent lifestyle – their connection is immediate and palpable.
Occasionally, Spencer’s deceitful actions towards his father, which eventually became known, and a significant love triangle involving Trina, the virtuous girl, and Esme, the manipulative woman, caused some doubts in Trina’s parents regarding Spencer. This dynamic, along with the constant struggle the couple faced, significantly increased the appeal of their relationship among fans. So strong was this appeal that they often referred to them as “Sprina,” a nickname still used today as fans continue to express their support for the pair through social media posts about their imagined union.
Through this duet and his entire portrayal of Spencer, Chavez demonstrated an extraordinary acting range. He managed to convincingly play a romantic lead, yet his character harbored deep emotional wounds due to his father’s prolonged absence. In scenes that could easily be overdramatic, Chavez delivered performances that outshone other actors on the show, regardless of their experience level. This was not because soap opera acting is inherently inferior, but rather due to the unfortunate stereotype that it falls short compared to film or prime-time television acting.
Daytime Emmy-Winning Glory Paves the Way for Monsters
The work that Chavez did on “General Hospital” earned him a Daytime Emmy Award in 2022 for Outstanding Younger Performer in a Drama Series. In his acceptance speech, he talked about how before landing this role, he was selling cars. You could see a person who was humble and grateful for the chance to act, simply happy to have a platform to share his passion for acting. Truly, you were watching a rising star, one who wouldn’t be limited by the boundaries of “General Hospital.
While under contract at the “General Hospital”, there was a public audition for the second installment of Ryan Murphy’s “Monster” anthology series, focusing on the Menendez Brothers. Seizing the opportunity, Chavez tried out and ultimately secured the role of Lyle Menendez. At that time, much discussion revolved around whether he would complete his soap opera contract or depart temporarily to film the show and then resume. Most felt it was only a matter of time before Chavez moved on, and without any disrespect intended, many believed he was set to bid farewell to “General Hospital”.
Dramatically akin to a soap opera plotline, it appeared as though Spencer met his end at Esme’s hands while defending Trina. However, his body was never found, which could potentially pave the way for his return if he chose to do so. It’s evident that Chavez values the experience he gained on General Hospital, but upon joining Murphy’s Grotesquerie shortly after wrapping up Monsters, it became clear that the actor was transitioning to a new phase in his career.
Chavez isn’t the only actor who started their career in soap operas and later gained fame. For instance, Demi Moore made her mark on ‘General Hospital’ in 1981, eventually rising to stardom. John Stamos also spent time there before moving to ‘Full House’. Sarah Michelle Gellar won a Daytime Emmy on ‘All My Children’, followed by her role as Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Lastly, Julianne Moore appeared on ‘As the World Turns’, where she earned an Emmy and later became an Academy Award winner.

They provide a dynamic environment where the stories constantly change, demanding adaptability and agility from the actors.
