The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 2 Scores High on Rotten Tomatoes

As a seasoned cinephile with over four decades of film-watching under my belt, I must say that the return of Daryl Dixon to our screens is a welcome sight indeed! The second season of “The Book of Carol – The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” has been met with more positive reviews than its first, despite a slightly rocky start.

Daryl Dixon made a comeback in the latest season of “The Walking Dead: The Book of Carol,” and while it may seem paradoxical, this season’s critical reception on Rotten Tomatoes is more favorable than before. However, most critics concur that the opening episode of this new season doesn’t quite match up to its predecessor in terms of strength.

As a devoted fan, I eagerly tuned in for the second season premiere of “The Walking Dead” spin-off on Sunday evening, daringly squaring off against Max’s latest episode of “The Penguin“. Despite the almost flawless acclaim that the new DC series has been garnering, Daryl Dixon had some ground to cover with its first fresh installment – a challenge it met head-on by securing an impressive 89% Tomatometer rating, a significant improvement over Season 1. Yet, as always, things aren’t quite so straightforward – just the way I like it!

2023 marked the debut of Season 1 for the series titled “Daryl Dixon“. Initially, critical reviews on the day were fairly mixed, with a combined rating of 61%. However, as the season progressed, the reception didn’t significantly improve. Contrastingly, Season 2 started off with only one negative review out of its initial nine, but many critics found that the first episode fell short compared to previous installments. For instance, Sarah Moran from Screen Rant stated that “Daryl Dixon season 2, The Book of Carol, doesn’t reach the heights of its first…” Similarly, Shawn Van Horn from Collider commented that like many recent episodes in The Walking Dead universe, this show “…has its usual flaws…

Regardless of individual opinions, there’s consistent praise for the show’s lead actress who reappeared in subsequent seasons following her absence in the first, with everyone agreeing on this point.

Daryl and Carol are Back Together Again…but is That a Good Thing?

Initially, the creators of “The Walking Dead” intended for both Daryl Dixon, portrayed by Norman Reedus, and his companion Carol, played by Melissa McBride, to be present throughout the series. However, due to scheduling conflicts related to filming in Europe, McBride was unable to participate in production. Although it was hoped she would rejoin if possible, there were no assurances about a second season for Daryl Dixon.

Although it hadn’t yet aired an episode, the show was renewed for a second season and, alongside it, a spin-off titled “Dead City” featuring Negan and Maggie. The announcement of McBride’s return, indicated by Carol’s name being included in the season title, has been widely acclaimed across all favorable reviews of the series.

ComicBook’s Cameron Bonomolo remarks that Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride are an incredible force, whether side by side or separately, in the latest action-packed season,” says the review. Meanwhile, David Opie from Radio Times states, “It’s undeniably exciting to have Daryl and Carol reunited on screen, watching this spin-off transform into the series it was destined to be.

As a movie enthusiast, I must confess that the initial seven reviews for this new season are far from unanimous in their opinions. In fact, there’s quite a divide! A substantial number of viewers have given the season opener just two stars or less, and some have gone as far as to express disappointment over Carol’s return. They argue that her reintroduction feels like a step backwards, repeating an established arc that didn’t sit well with them before.
