With Jimmy Kimmel on board as executive producer, it’s like having a dream team behind this special. The fact that Hulu is stepping up its stand-up game and aiming to become a destination for comedy fans is music to my ears.

Jimmy Kimmel’s latest comedy special, called “It’s Just Unfortunate,” is now available on the streaming service. This comes as the platform is intensifying its efforts in the stand-up comedy sector, aiming to compete with the dominance of Netflix that has been prevalent for some time. Distefano’s new special is his third, preceded by “Size 38 Waist” and “Speshy Weshy,” which were aired on Comedy Central and Netflix respectively.
The Hulu comedy project, titled “Hularious,” is set to launch in November with a performance by veteran comedian Jim Gaffigan. In the following months, it plans to differentiate itself from competitors by releasing a new hour of stand-up comedy each month, focusing more on quality than quantity. Jordan Helman, Hulu’s head of scripted content, explained their curated approach to THR, stating that “the mantra is very much quality over quantity.” To establish itself as a top destination for stand-up comedy, the platform will also offer a collection of licensed specials, including classic hours and recent releases.
Distefano’s stand-up show is anticipated to debut in early 2025, but an exact date hasn’t been specified yet. Notable personalities like Bill Burr, Ilana Glazer, Roy Wood Jr., Atsuko Okatsuka, Jessica Kirson, and Sebastian Maniscalco (who will also be joining), are already on Hulu’s roster. This streaming service has shown readiness to invest up to seven figures for the right talent. As for global availability, all these comedians’ specials, including Distefano’s, will be accessible on Disney+, where they have built a significant fanbase.
2023 saw Distefano achieving a remarkable milestone by selling out Radio City Music Hall and The Theater at Madison Square Garden consecutively, making him the first stand-up comedian to do so. Besides this, he’s co-hosting two popular podcasts titled “Chrissy Chaos” and “Hey Babe,” and has made a significant mark on television. He starred in MTV’s “Girl Code” and “Guy Code,” IFC’s “Bender,” and the Netflix gameshow “Ultimate Beastmaster.” However, he also attempted several TV pilots that unfortunately didn’t get produced, one of which was a CBS-based show centered around his life.
It’s important to note that Distefano has previously worked with Kimmel and his production company, Kimmelot. They teamed up in the past when Kimmel asked him to host ViceTV’s brief series, Super Maximum Retro Show. Besides producing ABC’s long-running program, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, and its newer hit game show, Generation Gap, Kimmelot is also responsible for Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night talk show, Jimmy Kimmel Live.
