Why Disney+ Is Betting on a Daily Series From Spain, ‘Return to Las Sabinas’

As a dedicated fan of quality storytelling and premium content, I am beyond excited about Disney+’s upcoming daily series, “Regreso a Las Sabinas” (Return to Las Sabinas). With its 70-episode run and two-and-a-half year production process, this melodrama is not just a testament to the Spanish creative industry’s resilience, but also a bold step into the streaming world.

Disney+, a streaming service by The Walt Disney Company, is preparing to debut an unprecedented kind of streaming content with “Regreso a Las Sabinas” (Return to Las Sabinas)), a 70-episode daily series from Spain. The initial five episodes will be available on October 11, followed by one new episode every day from October 14 (Monday to Friday).

Sofia Fábregas, Vice President of Original Production at Disney+ for The Walt Disney Company Spain, shared insights about the innovative attempt to transition a grand melodrama production onto the streaming platform during an event held in Madrid on Tuesday. Notably, the Disney+ series is the first daily streamed show produced in Spain.

The frequent release of new content to maintain viewer interest might be the reason behind creating the show. However, producing more episodes also meant higher production costs, which was a consideration. Ultimately, Fabregas and her team’s decision boiled down to their core principles. Making the series was about fulfilling audiences’ demands while upholding the high-quality standard that Disney is known for, according to Fabregas.

Fábregas stated during the Iberseries & Platino Industria conference in Madrid that Disney and its brand are all about delivering high-quality and premium content. He was joined by Jordi Frades, director of Diagonal TV (known for shows like Isabel, The Bookshop, and The Patients of Dr. Garcia), a Spanish production company owned by Banijay. Fábregas suggested that adapting successful formats from traditional television, such as long-running daily soaps and telenovelas, to streaming services could be an effective way to maintain this quality standard in the streaming world.

If it’s a soap opera or a high-end series on a regular basis,” she summed up, “its brand value will be established in the end.

The show was developed by Eulàlia Carrillo and features Celia Freijeiro, Andrés Velencoso, Olivia Molina, Natalia Sánchez, Nancho Novo, and María Casali as the main cast members.

In the story, Gracia and Paloma go back to their hometown of Las Sabinas to care for their father, Emilio. Upon her return, Gracia runs into her old flame, Miguel, who’s now betrothed to Esther. Meanwhile, Miguel’s brother, Tano, harbors feelings for Gracia and tries to pursue her when they meet again. Paloma assumes control of the family’s property, leading to disputes with landowner Paca Utrera, who has a sinister motive for the village. Emilio struggles to regain his daughters’ affections, yet a dark secret he conceals from them along with Paca could hinder this reconnection. Silvia, Miguel and Tano’s mother, encourages Gracia to depart from Manterana.

Simultaneously, Frades underscored the necessity of creating a top-notch series for a cherished entertainment company. “I didn’t sleep the night before production began,” he joked, earning chuckles. Yet, he also stressed that he and his team were prepared for the task at hand, acknowledging the high expectations. “We knew we had to impress Disney, and this is our outcome,” he disclosed.

According to Fábregas, working alongside skilled companies such as Diagonal, who produce high-quality work similar to what Disney seeks, is crucial for forming successful partnerships.

Emphasizing common motifs found within the show, such as “hatred and affection,” she pointed out that it will be accessible globally on the streaming platform’s various regions.

On Tuesday’s panel, held as part of Iberseries & Platino Industria in Spain’s capital city, focusing on content in Spanish and Portuguese languages, attendees were additionally given a quick glimpse of the upcoming series, which was warmly appreciated.
