However, his plans were abruptly cut short when he received multiple gunshots from an angry Oswald Cobblepot (Colin Farrell).
At present, it appears Oz is primarily focusing on setting up a conflict between the Falcone and Maroni families, all while secretly profiting from both sides. However, hints about Alberto Falcone’s secret project leave me with the impression that we might soon encounter Dr. Jonathan Crane, better known as The Scarecrow, in the storyline.
After only two complete episodes, and with a sneak peek of the third episode coming up next week, I believe I have gathered sufficient hints to begin exploring this theory further.
Alberto Falcone’s “New Kinda High” Opens The Door For The Fear Toxin
In the opening episode of “The Penguin“, titled “After Hours”, Alberto Falcone is portrayed as someone with a strong tendency towards addiction. He has a deep affection for two vices – alcohol and Drops, which significantly relate to his family’s trade. Thus, when the young Falcone made this statement during the grand premiere of “The Penguin“, I found myself paying close attention:
This is excellent, but eventually, you find yourself wondering if there’s more. Surely, there must be a different kind of experience waiting to be discovered… It’s not merely about enhancing fries with ketchup, my friend; what I’m suggesting is transforming the entire game altogether.
It’s clear that Alberto has grown weary of the effects provided by Drops, yearning for something fresh. In a sense reminiscent of _The Dark Knight_, he seeks a drug capable of whisking him away… though he may not be enthused about his destination. Such a desire seems to arise when one considers the reported side effects of Drops, as detailed in the _Batman_ Universe Wiki, which include increased restlessness and paranoia.
Among all sensations, I believe nothing could surpass this intense adrenaline rush more than the fear-inducing toxin that Dr. Jonathan Crane, a well-known character from the Batman universe, is known for deploying in his many portrayals of Gotham’s chaos.
We Still Don’t Know What That Mysterious New Drug Shipment Is
The storyline of “The Penguin” begins exactly one week after the disastrous election night in “The Batman,” as established by Alberto Falcone’s tombstone in Episode 2, titled “Inside Man.” This implies that the November 18th date associated with this enigmatic drug shipment is quickly approaching.
Following the first two chapters detailing Oswald Cobb’s possible rise to power, we’re still uncertain about the identity of this recently introduced substance, a new narcotic. However, we might have stumbled upon a hint this week with the sneak peek for Episode 3 titled “Bliss.” A fleeting scene from that teaser provides us a glimpse at unidentified liquid in clear bags, which appears to be transported in containers from Arkham State Hospital.
If the new drug is being disguised in this manner, there’s a high likelihood that Dr. Jonathan Crane played a role in its emergence as a fresh danger. The uncertainty about the origin of the shipment further strengthens the possibility that our hypothesis might turn out to be true.
The Penguin Originated As A Piece Of The Batman 2’s Story
It appears that several acquaintances I’ve discussed 2022’s “The Batman” with have expressed the opinion that Robert Pattinson’s portrayal had too many storylines simultaneously. Although I don’t entirely concur, I acknowledge that numerous threads were set up for subsequent projects to explore, and it seems as though the decision-makers wanted to steer clear of criticism about “The Batman 2” right from the start.

While it seems like his appearance might have taken a backseat for now, given the unpredictable nature of storytelling and potential surprises lurking around the corner, there’s definitely a chance we could see him pop up in the game soon. According to Zobel, they purposefully avoided tying the Scarecrow too closely to the series, leaving room for Matt Reeves to explore that character further if he wished.
It doesn’t rule out the possibility that Dr. Jonathan Crane might make an appearance in The Batman 2 or another project down the line. For now, it seems he is being kept under wraps, operating from behind the scenes. As events unfold and storylines involving this intriguing drug case develop, there’s a chance Dr. Crane could be brought into play. The volatile character of “reformed” Sofia Falcone (played by Cristin Miloti) may even serve as a trigger for his involvement.
The Scarecrow Could Be The Perfect Stepping Stone For The Joker’s Potential Rise
Despite Barry Keough’s evasive responses regarding The Batman: Part II, fans are still curious if Matt Reeves’ interpretation of The Joker will menace Gotham once more. Even though Matt Reeves has altered my perspective on revisiting The Joker, I remain apprehensive about his return to the Batman Rogues Gallery in the near future.
If it occurs, introducing Scarecrow initially seems like a very clever move. Madness, disorder, and corruption will only make Gotham City more chaotic, and Edward Nashton/The Riddler (Paul Dano) has merely ignited the spark. The Joker is known as Batman’s ultimate opposite, often serving as his main adversary across various comic book stories and adaptations.
As Dr. Jonathan Crane might transfer his Fear Toxin into our city soon, there’s a possibility that it could lead to increased instability, making the city more vulnerable to The Joker causing chaos. However, since we’re still exploring The Penguin’s storyline, this theory could turn out to be completely unfounded or only partially accurate.
