As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Kojima and his team have once again managed to stir the pot of anticipation and intrigue with the announcement of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. The first game was a masterpiece of storytelling, mystery, and gameplay, and it’s clear that they aim to deliver another mind-bending experience in the sequel.
Five years have passed since the debut of “Death Stranding,” and Hideo Kojima and his crew are currently engrossed in creating the follow-up, titled “Death Stranding 2: By the Shore.
In the original game, Kojima kept the imagery and backstory veiled until its launch date, and it seems he’s planning a similar strategy for the marketing of the sequel. Although we gained a clearer perspective thanks to Tokyo Game Show 2024, the information provided has only sparked more curiosity among fans, leaving them with even more questions unanswered.
TGS Showcase for Death Stranding 2
Kojima Productions has recently unveiled approximately 20 minutes worth of footage. Although the video contains limited gameplay segments, it highlights several key characters and offers a glimpse into the initial setting for Sam Bridges (Norman Reedus) in Death Stranding 2.
Who are the Cast of Characters?
In Death Stranding 2, there are some familiar characters from the initial game, but new characters will also be introduced for players to interact with. While players may already know Sam Bridges and his role, Fragile, portrayed by Lea Seydoux, plays a more significant part in the sequel compared to her limited appearance in the first installment.
Apart from recalling Heartman (Nicolas Winding Refn), they’ll remember him for his stylish demeanor and the practical exoskeleton that enables him to rest while standing. Incidentally, Troy Baker reprises his role as Higgs Monaghan, and this time around, he appears much more like a deranged circus clown compared to his rather grounded appearance in the initial game.
Other new characters include:
Shioli Kutsuna, a team member aboard the DHV Magellan, is anticipating the arrival of her baby as she’s currently expecting motherhood.
As a gamer, tomorrow I’ll be encountering an enigmatic figure, rumored to have returned from the Realm Beyond Life itself. This character has piqued my interest and I can’t wait to uncover their secrets!
A character named Dollman (Fatih Akin) is trapped within a puppet-like form. Once believed to be a spiritual medium, he has apparently lost his abilities. He appears to be well-informed about the world beyond the UCA, and it seems likely that he’ll accompany Sam, offering witty and enlightening observations—much like Mimir in God of War.
Captain Tarman (George Miller) – The captain and physician aboard the DHV Magellan, whose appearance suggests a unique condition granting him extraordinary talents. However, the crew must exercise caution when interacting with him due to his special needs.
The noteworthy aspect of Miller’s casting is that it mirrors the first game’s approach, where the director, Guillermo del Toro, served as a role model for a character. Del Toro, renowned for his work in films like Hellboy and The Shape of Water, played a similar part in the production.
Still a Mystery
In the preview, it provides extensive information about the environment, yet the subsequent part maintains numerous enigmas for gamers to decipher.
Even though players who watched the initial match may still be perplexed about the current events, it’s no surprise to those familiar with Kojima’s work, as they’ve come to expect such complexity from a director of his caliber.
No task has ever been as daunting as trying to make sense of the Metal Gear Solid franchise, but players still love Kojima, and On the Beach looks like he’s back on his usual antics.
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is set to release in 2025 for the PS5 and PS5 Pro.
