Snow White Star Rachel Zegler Responds to Hateful Online Backlash

As a seasoned movie enthusiast with a keen eye for rising talents, I must say that Rachel Zegler is undoubtedly one to watch. Her meteoric rise from high school student to Hollywood darling was swift and impressive, earning her critical acclaim and even a Golden Globe Award for her performance in West Side Story. However, the spotlight also brought with it a storm of internet trolling that intensified when she landed the role of Snow White in Disney’s live-action adaptation.

For a young actor like Rachel Zegler who was unexpectedly plucked from high school by Steven Spielberg for his 2021 remake of West Side Story, the journey has been marked by extraordinary highs and crushing lows. The rapid ascent of her career was confirmed when she received critical acclaim for her role, even bagging a Golden Globe Award, but the downside came swiftly in the form of intense online bullying that escalated after she secured the role of Snow White in Disney’s live-action adaptation. As she gears up to appear in Sam Gold’s interpretation of Romeo and Juliet alongside Kit Connor, Zegler is openly discussing the harmful comments she has encountered on the internet.

During an interview with Variety, Zegler mentioned some Disney enthusiasts who seemed critical towards her, a Latina actress, portraying a character originally depicted as having porcelain skin in Disney’s animated Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Notably, the actress from The Hunger Games clarified that her interpretation of the character doesn’t involve pining for a man. She also pointed out that the prince in the 1937 film is portrayed as stalking Snow White, which sparked controversy among some fans. Zegler was open about finding certain aspects of the original story problematic, which drew negative attention from some passionate viewers.

“Initially, her words were saddened by the backlash, as she felt strongly that Snow White was capable of more than what people perceived. She expresses this sentiment by saying, ‘I truly believe women can accomplish anything.’ However, she also feels some comments may not have been accurately represented.”

I’d prefer not to impose limitations like this: “Love and work can coexist, they shouldn’t be mutually exclusive. It’s never been the case, and it’s misleading when such ideas are presented out of context or humor doesn’t translate well. The love narrative is a crucial part of our storyline; some might have thought we were abandoning it, but that was never the truth, just not the focus on that particular occasion.

Zegler feels that certain fans intentionally twisted her words to provide grounds for attacking her online. Similar to Brie Larson, Zegler has taken a stance as someone unafraid to express her opinions, even if it might invite criticism. This is something she’s accustomed to observing in the entertainment industry and media. In her own words, “I’ve witnessed women being torn down throughout my entire life, my career,” Zegler states. “We’ll see it in the upcoming election as well. I fear we’ll continue to witness this for a long time. At times, it can seem like we’re moving backwards; it definitely felt that way when that was happening.

Rachel Zegler Also Garnered Criticism Over Her Support of Palestine

As a fervent admirer putting words to my thoughts, I’d say:

For Zegler, it boiled down to a strong aversion towards seeing kids perish, even though she acknowledges that the circumstances are far more intricate than just that tragic outcome.

I find it unbearable to witness children losing their lives. I believe this sentiment should be widely shared and not seen as a controversial opinion. I acknowledge that I am accountable for my feelings, as well as the actions I take in response to them. As we approach the one-year anniversary of the tragic attacks in Israel on October 7th, I’ve been closely watching this longstanding conflict. Like many others, I am deeply saddened by the mounting casualties we’re seeing in both regions.

“Zegler deserves recognition for sticking to her convictions, voicing her opinions fearlessly, and maintaining her composure when faced with harsh criticism at times. She might feel the impact of negative comments, but she won’t be abandoning her public presence any time soon. In her own words, ‘I don’t want to give them the satisfaction of knowing they’ve hurt me in the moment,’ as taking a break from social media gives critics too much power.’
