EXCLUSIVE: Are Thalapathy Vijay and Ajith Kumar quitting films? Exhibitor Daggubati Suresh Babu insights upon future of Tamil cinema

As a passionate connoisseur of Tamil cinema, who has witnessed the rise and fall of many stars, I find myself captivated by the insightful words of Daggubati Suresh Babu. His unique perspective on the industry’s resilience and its ability to create new superstars is not only enlightening but also reassuring.

In a captivating sit-down conversation exclusively arranged by TopMob, I found myself immersed among film exhibitors from India, who graciously shared their insights on the present state and promising horizons of Indian cinema.

During a recent interview, prominent film exhibitor Daggubati Suresh Babu was inquired about his perspective on the future direction of Tamil cinema, considering that stars like Thalapathy Vijay, Ajith Kumar have expanded their careers beyond acting and Rajinikanth’s capacity to take on numerous projects is limited.

In response, Suresh Babu stated, “Whenever a prominent figure departs for any reason, we might feel a void is created, but the audience always knows how to cultivate the next great talent. If SP Balasubrahmanyam were to pass away, what would become of music…if someone were to die, nothing significant would change.

Just as NTR’s departure paved the way for another star to rise, the cinema audience in Tamil Nadu will likely elevate a local actor to superstardom or make an actor from another language a household name, or perhaps a multilingual film could create a new superstar. However, it’s important to remember that while there may be some overlap in their careers, we shouldn’t dwell on that unnecessary worry,” the exhibitor explained.

To expand on this, the Telugu film industry is noted for keeping numerous actors active. They maintain a top tier of six stars, followed by another group of six. Numerous individuals have been able to produce 100 crore films, and I believe that similar success will be seen in Chennai as well.

At a point when it seems that popular Tamil actors such as Thalapathy Vijay and Ajith Kumar might be moving away from films, an exhibitor’s response arrives. Whilst Vijay is preparing for his political career, aiming at the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections in 2026, Ajith Kumar has made known his intentions to return from a racing hiatus. In fact, he has even unveiled his racing team!

Beyond that, it’s not just Superstar Rajinikanth who continues to captivate audiences at the box office, but he does so consistently. Yet, it’s worth noting that his workload is limited, and he usually stars in only one film each year.
