The Book of Carol Finally Finds Closure for Her Daughter’s Death

The Book of Carol Finally Finds Closure for Her Daughter's Death

As a devoted fan of “The Walking Dead” series, I can truly empathize with Carol’s journey. Twelve long years have passed since Sophia’s tragic disappearance, and it seems that this character has been carrying the weight of her loss like an unbearable burden all this time.

The long-awaited second season of “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon,” titled “The Book of Carol, has arrived and it doesn’t disappoint! While our main character, Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus), played by Norman Reedus, embarks on a journey through France, grappling with his yearning to return home to America, there runs a parallel narrative. His closest friend, Carol (Melissa McBride), is in pursuit of him due to concerns that he may require assistance since he hasn’t checked in.

In typical Carol fashion, she ventures to Maine, his last known whereabouts, to uncover his possible next steps. As it often happens with Carol, she cleverly finds a means to cross the ocean into another country. However, her trip isn’t just about geographical travel; it’s also about confronting inner struggles and achieving closure that has been overdue since the original series.

Carol’s Hallucinations Are Back

In her relentless pursuit against adversaries, carjacking, and navigating towards a young man who owns a small aircraft, Carol unquestionably demonstrates the same resilient spirit she’s nurtured since the loss of her husband and child. However, she’s also venturing into realms she hadn’t dared to before. Upon discovering his estate with Ash (Manish Dayal), he extends an invitation for her to spend the night. Guiding her, he leads her to a barn at the rear of his land, where he intends for her to rest.

She hesitates upon seeing him near the doors and stands still, expressionless like a statue. A vision of Sophia (Madison Lintz), appearing undead much like in season two of The Walking Dead, emerges from the barn. After enduring the heart-wrenching loss of her only biological child, followed by numerous other adopted children, it seems that Carol is given a rare moment to pause and contemplate the most emotionally taxing ordeal she has ever encountered.

Through numerous struggles since then, such as being ostracized for burning ill humans alive, executing a mentally unwell young girl to save baby Judith, and witnessing her adoptive son Henry’s (Macsen Lintz) zombified head on a pike, the loss of Sophia seems to be the incident that may have irreparably shattered Carol. She was her sole link to the world before, the only individual who was deeply intertwined with her.

In the heart-stopping moment when Sophia stepped out of the barn, it wasn’t by chance that Daryl was there to support Carol. I stood beside her, steadying her and begging her not to turn around, all while trying to shield her from the horror. This happened long before we had developed a deeper connection, and before many even knew Daryl had a tender side. This instance marked a turning point, not just for Carol, but also for our friendship.

Sophia Has a Major Presence Without Being There

Despite Sophia’s passing over a decade ago and infrequent mentions in the original series, the new book The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol, delves into Carol’s lingering emotions regarding the event. Though she has maintained a strong facade for over a decade as the group battled both living and dead adversaries, this narrative allows her to confront the feelings and trauma she has suppressed all these years. Now, with only herself to deal with, Carol is finally able to release her emotions and address the pain she’s carried within for so long.

In a different setting, Carol joins Ash for a meal and he places a petite homemade vase filled with a Cherokee rose on the table, a bloom he cultivated in his greenhouse. The sight of it momentarily halts Carol. Ash inquires if she has an allergy, but her thoughts seem preoccupied by something else. “They symbolize hope,” Ash explains to Carol. However, another voice echoes in her mind instead.

The scene transitions to a memory from when Daryl plucked this identical flower for Carol during their search for Sophia. In this poignant moment between the future companions, Daryl shares his belief that the flower miraculously blossomed where a mother’s tears dropped.

Carol sees this instance as validation for a strategy she’d been considering, which aimed to persuade Ash into joining her efforts. She then deceives Ash, who had hesitantly expressed his sorrow over the loss of his young son, by falsely claiming that she too has lost a daughter in the past. However, it should be noted that her initial statement was indeed true, but what followed was far from accurate.

Carol Has Become Ruthlessly Dedicated

In a bid to tug at Ash’s heartstrings and further her own objectives, Carol suggested that her daughter Sophia had gone to France with her father just before the apocalypse. With no contact since then, she harbored hope that Sophia might still be alive. Even if the chances were slim, Carol felt it was imperative to search for her daughter. This situation highlighted Carol’s ruthless determination and single-mindedness, but also underscored the depth of her feelings for Daryl, as she compared his significance to that of Sophia.

However, mentioning Sophia’s name brings up painful memories and emotions for Carol that she hasn’t faced in a while. In a later conversation with Ash when he’s contemplating whether or not to assist her, he queries Carol about what has changed recently that prompts her to search for Sophia after all these years.

She replies, clearly burdened with more than just Daryl’s predicament. In truth, she felt compelled to progress, to act.” It could be that she’s also hinting at her lingering pain from the loss of Sophia years ago, her regret over letting her child wander and feel scared, and her ongoing struggle to find peace in the aftermath.

In the world of “The Walking Dead” and its spin-off series, it’s been approximately 12 years since Sophia was heartbreakingly found out to have been bitten by a walker. Since then, she has vanished into the woods and hasn’t been seen or heard from since. It remains unknown how long she survived after being bitten, where she went, or what her fate was. Given the condition of her body, it seems she managed to evade complete consumption by walkers before succumbing to the infection and going into hiding.

In a state of fear and loneliness, the shy Sophia likely endured a series of dreadful days as the bite spread through her system, triggering fever and ultimately leading to her passing. The idea that Sophia was in such distress without anyone by her side, with her mother unable to locate her or worrying she wasn’t making an effort to find help, has tormented Carol ever since. However, she has never openly discussed this. Occasionally, she would hint at her daughter, but she has never fully revealed the depth of her sorrow and loss. After Sophia passed away, Carol withdrew into solitude, transforming into a woman who was almost unrecognizable compared to her previous self.

It’s satisfying to see this series delve into such an important theme in such a moving and fitting manner. Carol’s portrayal of her ongoing grief over Sophia’s loss and her ability to leverage that pain to her advantage by manipulating another character demonstrates how much she has evolved. The previous Carol wouldn’t have contemplated such an action. The transformed Carol doesn’t hesitate to consider such a strategy.

carrying a heavy burden of grief from losing her child long ago, Carol is gradually finding solace. Remarkably, this healing comes from an unexpected source – someone who has experienced the same tragic loss and may not even know they’re assisting her. This development, eagerly anticipated by fans for quite some time, demonstrates that Carol never stopped grieving for Sophia. Crucially, it reveals that Carol had not fully dealt with this loss as she should have, but now, these unresolved emotions are surfacing in unprecedented ways for the audience to witness. Fans are on the edge of their seats, eagerly looking forward to seeing how this emotional journey unfolds over the six episodes of the upcoming season.
