Dan Da Dan Is One Of 2024’s Biggest Anime Releases, And It’s A Must Watch For Fans Of Body Horror And The X-Files

As a gamer and anime enthusiast with a soft spot for the bizarre and the macabre, I can confidently say that Dan Da Dan has left me utterly bewildered, yet oddly captivated. Having dabbled in everything from Yu-Gi-Oh! to One Piece, this show stands out as a unique blend of humor, absurdity, and darkness that I’ve never encountered before.

Although I’m not an avid anime enthusiast, I’ve found a few series that I’ve enjoyed throughout the years, such as my childhood favorites like Yu-Gi-Oh! and Dragon Ball Z (one of the greatest animated TV shows ever made), and more recently, I’ve been watching One Piece after being captivated by its live-action adaptation’s first season on Netflix last year. However, nothing quite compares to the bizarre nature of Dan Da Dan, a show that I find uniquely entertaining due to its masterful combination of humor, absurdity, and darkness. For those who appreciate body horror or The X-Files, this series is definitely worth watching.

In the debut of “Dan Da Dan,” an anime series based on Yukinobu Tatsu’s manga, viewers can now stream it on both Netflix and Crunchyroll. It is worth mentioning that I had the opportunity to watch the first three episodes ahead of time. This year’s most anticipated anime, “Dan Da Dan,” focuses on high school students Momo Ayase and Ken “Okarun” Takakura. While Momo has a firm belief in ghosts and Ken in aliens, they both dismiss each other’s interests. However, as the story unfolds, they discover that their beliefs were validated, and this newfound knowledge grants them unique abilities. If you’re hesitant to dive into this peculiar anime, here are the intriguing opening credits of “Dan Da Dan” for your viewing pleasure:

If you require a little more motivation to tune in, here’s some information that might interest you if you fit into one or more of the groups I previously mentioned.

Why Body Horror Fans Will Like Dan Da Dan

In the story of Dan Da Dan, the plot truly begins when Momo challenges Okarun to explore a supposedly haunted tunnel, and in turn, Okarun dares Momo to visit an abandoned hospital where a UFO was said to have been spotted. However, things take a strange turn for Okarun as he encounters a decayed and obscene demon named Turbo Granny. This creature not only casts a curse upon him but also, in all seriousness, steals his manhood. Consequently, he starts transforming into a monster reminiscent of Granny. Fortunately, the psychic abilities that emerge within Momo following her alien abduction can help control this new aspect of Okarun’s personality.

In “Dan Da Dan,” Okarun’s metamorphoses into a demonic figure might make you squirm, but fans of top-notch body horror films will find it intriguing. Similarly, viewers who appreciate movies about demonic possession will also enjoy this aspect of the series, given that Okarun is grappling with exactly that in “Dan Da Dan.” Although he may eventually master the curse Granny placed on him, without Momo by his side, Okarun’s uncontrolled transformation could lead to chaos.

Why The X-Files Fans Will Like Dan Da Dan

To begin with, let me clarify something: Dan Da Dan doesn’t mimic the procedural elements of The X-Files, a series you can watch with a Hulu subscription. But if you enjoyed the alien themes in that show and are looking for something even more bizarre, then Dan Da Dan might be just what you’re after. In this series, Okarun encounters the chaos of Turbo Granny, while Momo gets abducted by extraterrestrials who wear peculiar human-like costumes and are fixated on reproduction with her. Fortunately, it was Okarun’s ability to traverse through Momo’s phone and reach the spaceship that thwarted this alien attempt.

These aliens are unlike anything I’ve seen in other media, and are arguably just as creepy-looking as Turbo Granny. And they’re not the only types of aliens that will be present in Dan Da Dan, but I can’t say any more than that. Regardless, I’m interested to see extraterrestrials explored on this show, particularly learning about their homeworlds and cultures. Also, hopefully not all the aliens, and for that matter ghosts, are antagonistic towards Momo, Okarun and their allies… but I’ll have a blast watching them fight the ones that are.

Every Thursday, fresh episodes of “Dan Da Dan” become available on both Netflix and Crunchyroll. For those seeking more anime to watch around Halloween, here are some fitting options you might enjoy!
