As a Thai-American film enthusiast who has grown up with the rich tapestry of Thai cinema, I am absolutely thrilled about Thailand’s selection of Pat Boonnitipat’s masterpiece, “How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies,” for the 2025 Oscars in the best international feature film category. This film, with its unique blend of humor and heart, has struck a chord not just with me, but with millions across Southeast Asia and beyond.
In 2025, Thailand has chosen director Pat Boonnitipat’s touching blockbuster movie titled “How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies” to represent them in the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars. This selection was announced on Friday by the National Federation of Thai Film Associations (MPC).
Written collaboratively by Boonnitipat and Thodsapon ‘Ped’ Thiptinnakorn, the film “How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies” has become a cultural sensation in Thailand, outperforming any movie this year in terms of earnings within the country. The production house behind this success is GDH, a renowned studio based in Bangkok. The movie resonates with its unconventional yet ultimately endearing narrative about a cunning young man who leaves his job to look after his ailing grandmother, hoping to claim her inheritance. A significant factor contributing to the film’s popularity is the portrayal of the grandson by Putthipong Assaratanakul, also known as Billkin, a popular singer-turned-actor in Thailand.
I’ve been part of something truly extraordinary – a movie that’s raking in millions across Southeast Asia and Australia/New Zealand. Known as “How to Make Millions,” this film has become the highest-grossing Thai production ever in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Myanmar, Australia, and New Zealand. With successful screenings in the U.S. and China more recently, we’re now knocking on the door of $50 million at the global box office!
GDH announced that the movie has been a hit in Thailand, drawing audiences from various age groups, including the young adults and senior citizens. It’s not common nowadays to see grandparents in their 70s and 80s going to the cinema with their grandchildren in their 20s and 50s, but this movie has managed to make it happen.
Since 1994, Thailand has put forth films for consideration in the category of Best International Feature Film at the Academy Awards; however, to date, it hasn’t received a nomination.
On December 17, they will announce the candidates for the best international feature at the 97th Academy Awards. The nominees will be revealed on January 17, and the winners of the 2025 Academy Awards will be disclosed on Sunday, March 2.
