‘I Have Tough News.’ Kurtwood Smith Announces Netflix Has Canceled That ‘90s Show, But He Has A Funny Take On Why The Show Needs To Land Elsewhere

As a dedicated fan who grew up with the hilarious antics of ‘That ’70s Show’, I can say that the cancellation of ‘That ’90s Show’ has left me feeling like Eric Forman just got kicked out of college again. But, much like Red Forman never gives up on his kids, neither will Kurtwood Smith give up on this beloved series.

Regrettably, after two seasons, “That ’90s Show” has been included in the list of shows scheduled to conclude or be canceled in 2024. The series, which debuted on Netflix’s 2024 schedule in June, was terminated by the streamer just three months later. However, Kurtwood Smith, who played Red Forman, isn’t going down without a struggle and some humorous perspectives.

Although many people loved “That ’90s Show,” unfortunately, it won’t continue as Netflix opted to terminate it. However, if Smith has his way, this spinoff won’t end with just two seasons. Expressing his feelings on Instagram, the actor from Red wrote a lengthy caption expressing gratitude towards fans, cast, and crew, and shared some heartwarming photos from the set – have a look at them:

It’s well-known that Smith was eager for more of “That 90’s Show,” and he had specific ideas about which relationships he wanted to see develop further. Given this, it’s not surprising that his Instagram post would be filled with nostalgia about his character Red, while also expressing hope that the series won’t end here. Although ending a show is never enjoyable, the actor managed to keep things light-hearted as he pondered the show’s potential future in his caption by jokingly commenting on it.

In Red Forman’s terms… we won’t act foolishly… instead, we’ll put in the effort to make this show a success because great grandparents would strive to ensure these kids graduate from high school. #That90sShow #topfanever 🙏🧀 (paraphrased)

As a dedicated gamer, I can vouch for Kitty and Red sticking around even beyond season 2! Just like Kurtwood Smith put it, they aren’t just saying goodbye to the show. Instead, they’re planning on keeping the flame burning by shopping it around, seeing as our youngsters are determined to graduate high school, no matter what challenges come their way (fingers crossed for smooth sailing).

There’s a chance that “That ’90s Show” could be revived by another network or streaming service following its cancellation. Just as other shows with dedicated fanbases have been given a second chance, so too could this one, especially since the storylines are not yet complete. As Smith put it, we’d love to see these characters graduate from high school, and they might need to relocate to make that happen.

The classic sitcom “That ’70s Show” is widely regarded as one of the greatest sitcoms ever made, and its timeless humor makes it a joy to rewatch again and again. Though the original characters have grown up and “That ’90s Show” focuses on their offspring, the affection for the original series remains strong, and the spinoff has received plenty of praise as well. Given this ongoing popularity and the potential influence of dedicated fans, it’s not far-fetched to imagine that the spinoff might find a new home instead of being canceled altogether.

So, hopefully, Smith’s funny take turns into a real possibility, and maybe That ‘90s Show can find a new home on a different streamer. We’ll be sure to keep you posted as we learn more about the show’s future. In the meantime, you can go back to the ‘90s with Red, Kitty and the kids by streaming the comedy with a Netflix subscription.
