As a seasoned art enthusiast with a penchant for contemporary works that push boundaries and challenge the status quo, I am thrilled to see such a vibrant lineup of exhibitions gracing the city of London this Frieze Week.
Frieze has made significant strides since its establishment as an arts magazine in 1991. A decade later, the first Frieze London was launched in 2003, followed by additional events in New York, Los Angeles, and Seoul that have grown to be major highlights on the cultural scene. Preparing for its 21st edition in Regent’s Park, Frieze London 2024 promises to be one of its largest events yet, featuring over 160 galleries from 43 nations. These include prominent international galleries like Gagosian, Sprüth Magers, and David Zwirner, as well as influential London-based spaces such as Victoria Miro, Maureen Paley, and White Cube.
This year’s fair will feature a fresh design by A Studio Between, emphasizing new voices at the entrance and highlighting key curated sections like the Sculpture showcase, Artist-to-Artist, and the latest themed section Smoke. Frieze London Director, Eva Langret, stated that the revamped layout will put solo presentations and emerging artists at the forefront, underscoring Frieze’s dedication to contemporary art. Additionally, there will be more areas for dialogue and interaction, ensuring visitors have unique and enlightening experiences.

1) Under the guidance of Pablo José Ramírez from the Hammer Museum, the exhibition titled “Smoke” will delve into ceramic pieces by a diverse group of artists worldwide, who are investigating indigenous and diasporic pasts. This year, Frieze Masters, showcasing art spanning from antiquity to modern times, is set for a grand comeback with numerous enticing items from 130 galleries across 26 countries, including Gagosian, Hauser & Wirth, and Afridi. A significant focus on ancient Asian art has been highlighted in this year’s event.
During this major event, you’ll find a variety of exhibitions and activities connected to the fair happening daily. Some noteworthy attractions include “Francis Bacon: Human Presence” at the National Portrait Gallery, Mire Lee transforming Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall, an exhibition by Hew Locke at the British Museum, and Lauren Halsey making her UK solo debut at Serpentine Galleries.

Gagosian Presents Sculptures by John Chamberlain and Furniture by Marc Newson
This year at Frieze Masters, Gagosian gallery invited Urs Fischer, a renowned Swiss conceptual artist, to curate an exhibit featuring sculptures by John Chamberlain and furniture by Marc Newson from Australia. Chamberlain’s work blended principles of Abstract Expressionism, Pop art, and Minimalism with the dramatic curves reminiscent of the High Baroque era. This unique fusion resulted in intriguing sculptures made from automobile metal, emphasizing the contrast between creation and destruction by showcasing both processes side by side.
In this display, you’ll find his sculptures from 2008 to 2011: “COLONELGARGLE”, “ENTIRELYFEARLESS”, and “STUFFEDWITHSURPRISE”. These will be juxtaposed with pieces by Newson, such as the “Lockheed Lounge” (2006), “Random Pak Chair”, “Low Voronoi Shelf” (both from 2008), and “Charcoal Glass Chair” (2017). All these works were created within a decade, offering an engaging conversation in the visual language that combines industrial aesthetics with everyday functionality.
Bobbi Essers at Unit London
As a passionate gamer, I can’t wait to share my excitement about Dutch artist Bobbi Essers’ first UK solo exhibition at Unit London! Titled “The World at Our Command“, this showcase features an impressive collection of new paintings that highlight the profound impact of intimacy in platonic relationships.

Mike Kelley and Mire Lee at Tate Modern
During every Frieze Art Week, a stunning new installation takes center stage at the Tate Modern’s famous Turbine Hall. After El Anatsui’s intricate bottle cap arrangement, Mire Lee, a renowned Korean artist, will fill the area surrounding the museum entrance with her mysterious, moving sculptures. Known for her work in steel, silicone, grease, and liquids, Lee creates artworks that seem to pulse and leak – reflecting the cycle of life and decay.
At Tate, you’ll find an extensive exploration titled “Mike Kelley: Ghost and Spirit”. This exhibition covers the full scope of Mike Kelley’s career, featuring his renowned series such as ‘Kandor’ and ‘More Love Hours Than Can Ever Be Repaid’. You can catch this display at Tate until March 9th, 2025.

Perrotin has just revealed its plans to establish a long-term presence in London, set to open in 2025. The new location will be found within a revamped area at Claridge’s, an iconic Art Deco hotel dating back to the 19th century that has welcomed numerous royals and celebrities like Queen Elizabeth II and Audrey Hepburn.
At Frieze’s prestigious roster of worldwide art fairs, Perrotin Gallery will exhibit a diverse collection highlighting both established and up-and-coming artists such as the late Park Seo-bo, Jean-Michel Othoniel, Elizabeth Glaessner, Laurent Grasso, Takashi Murakami, Mathilde Denize, Aya Takano, Gregor Hildebrandt, and JR. Notably, JR will also be signing his latest Phaidon publication at Shreeji in Marylebone on October 9th.
Lauren Halsey at Serpentine Galleries

Lauren Halsey is transporting a piece of South Central to London. Renowned for her Afro-Futurist artworks, this LA native has recently disclosed plans to establish a sculpture park in her hometown and will soon exhibit her inaugural institutional showcase at the Serpentine Galleries in the UK.
In this transformation, the South Gallery of Serpentine will become a vibrant “Funk Sculpture Garden”, with Halsey’s detailed sculptures serving as the garden’s map. The floor will be adorned with a kaleidoscopic pattern, while the walls will be crafted from CDs to add a unique shine. Additionally, the artist will exhibit her debut moving image work alongside sand dunes and custom-designed wallpaper.
