In Kevin Smith’s latest movie, “The 4:30 Film,” which is typical of his work, there are numerous cameos by big-name stars. However, when a renowned author in the fantasy genre expressed interest in being part of this new project, it prompted Smith to write an entirely new scene for the film. Often, Smith works with the same actors and invites his close friends and family to make appearances and contribute to his films. Yet, during the production of “The 4:30 Movie,” Kevin Smith received a surprising text, allegedly from George R.R. Martin… or so he believed.
Kevin Smith shared that he received a message from George R.R. Martin on his phone, as reported by Cinema Blend. The sender mentioned they were planning to visit New Jersey during the summer, at which point Smith invited them for a cameo in ‘The 4:30 Movie’. He went on to say, “I proposed, ‘Why don’t you come be in The 4:30 Movie.’ The response was, ‘Are you aware of who this is?’
To Kevin Smith’s astonishment, the person who contacted him wasn’t George R.R. Martin as he had assumed, but Genesis Rodriguez – a cast member from Tusk and Yoga Hosers. Smith clarified, “In my phone, George R.R. Martin is GRRM, as he is in most places. But Genesis, she listed herself as GR, Genesis Rodriguez.” Initially, having George R.R. Martin make a small appearance seemed fitting, but it didn’t sit well to reduce one of his previous leading actors to such a minor role. Consequently, Kevin Smith found himself compelled to write an entirely new scene in order to keep his unintentional commitment. He elaborated:
Originally, I hadn’t been involved with Genesis at all. Then she asked me about lines and scenes, to which I responded that I would provide them. After our conversation ended, I realized, “Oh no! I need to write a scene for Genesis and develop a character. Not just a scene, but an entire sequence. And we’re only a week and a half away from shooting!
Genesis Rodriguez Plays a “Boba Fett” Type Character in The 4:30 Movie
In my own words, I’d say: It’s typical of Kevin Smith to skillfully portray a character’s essence using a Star Wars reference. With time running out, he had the challenge of introducing an entirely new character and seamlessly integrating them into the entire film without it feeling contrived. Just like a devoted fan (which is the highest form of praise), Kevin Smith drew inspiration from one of sci-fi’s most legendary sidekicks: Boba Fett.
Smith commented, “‘She’s often as unobtrusive as Boba Fett to Manager Mike’s Darth Vader.’ This setup allowed Genesis Rodriguez to have her own moment in ‘The 4:30 Movie.'” In the movie, Rodriguez portrays a theater usher. Initially seen in the background, she eventually steps into the limelight, urging Brian (Austin Zajur) to pursue his dream of being a filmmaker. He added on.
“Honestly, that’s my favorite scene in the movie. I love the movie to death, but that scene. My heart skips a beat. That scene wouldn’t have existed if I didn’t mistake Genesis Rodriguez for George R.R. Martin.”
